You bitch, my mind screamed. How do you think it makes me feel?

I moved my hands away from my breasts and my pussy, my eyes locked on Viola’s.

You did this.I felt my cheeks glow with the embarrassment of my nudity in this sacred civic space, with the well-dressed president watching me expose my private parts.

Viola bit her lip.

I’m sorry, she mouthed silently. I felt my eyes blaze with anger.

My hands reached my head and I felt again the humiliating lifting of my ribcage that went with this posture, the way it made me present my little breasts to any lewdly staring observer my captors chose for me.

“What’s that, Viola?” asked the diplomat in the dark suit, whom I thought I recognized as one of the Magisterian royal family. His tone mocked her gently, as if she were a recalcitrant child. “Did you want to say something?”

Viola dropped her gaze to my feet, her own face going red.

“No, Your Highness,” she said.

The prince looked at Major Harrow.

“She’s lovely, Major. Will you have the pleasure of reforming her yourself?”

My eyes went very wide, and, hardly meaning to, I turned my head to get a glimpse of the officer. Major Harrow didn’t return my glance but kept looking straight at his prince, so that I instantly turned my face back, blushing furiously at how I had just betrayed my own interest in the matter. My tummy fluttered unforgivably, and I seemed unable to think clearly.

“I’ll definitely request the assignment, Your Highness. I share your opinion—and Sara here has also displayed a good deal of spirit. Whoever does serve as her guardian will doubtless enjoy himself greatly.”

I saw Viola’s eyes come up to mine as she heard Major Harrow’s assessment of me, and their sheer inscrutability made me drop my own gaze yet again, the heat in my face feeling like an inferno. I moved my interlaced fingers in my hair, in a doomed attempt to find a position in which I could forget my humiliating posture and the way it presented my nudity to all present.

“It sounds like Miss Granzofar is possessed of certain qualities her former president lacks,” the prince said. “Eh, Viola?”

I looked up. Viola had closed her own eyes, and her blush had redoubled in fierceness.

“Yes, Your Highness,” she said softly, to my astonishment.

“Sara,” the prince said to me, so that I looked at him in surprise to be addressed by one of the most important humans in the galaxy, “Viola has something to tell you.” He looked at the woman I had served so loyally for so long. “Go ahead, Viola. Remember that your compliance with the conditions of your own agreement must be complete, or you’re going to find yourself undergoing reformation, too.”

I frowned deeply as I looked back at Viola. She had opened her eyes again, but her gaze had descended to the beautiful mosaic floor, made of native Artemisian stone and fashioned into the great seal of our world: a shining human figure of no obvious gender with their hands raised in welcome.

“I…”

“Look at Sara,” said the admiral, speaking for the first time. “You owe her that, don’t you, Madam Former President?”

A new surge of pink flowed into Viola’s cheeks as she raised her eyes to mine. When she began again, her voice seemed harsher, filled with bitter defiance and resentment—resentment ofme, even, as if it were somehowmyfault she found herself here.

“I have signed an order committing you to this reformation center, Sara,” she said. She looked down for a moment, her nostrils flaring with a deep breath, as if in search of resolve. She brought her eyes back up to my face. “In accordance with Magisterian values and their analysis of the data shared with them concerning you, you will be made an example of.”

Fury rose in my chest along with the butterflies in my tummy. I looked back at Viola with as much scorn as I could manage. I knew this part—I had figured it out, anyway.

“You will be trained as a submissive concubine for the pleasure of a Magisterian guardian.”

My lips parted, but no sound came out. Viola had tears in her eyes now, but she continued relentlessly, obviously desperate to have finished delivering the required message of betrayal.

“You belong to the Magisterian Federation, Sara, from this moment on.”

My breath came in ragged pants between my open lips. Part of me wanted to yellWhat?but I knew how stupid it would have sounded. The information seemed all too clear.

Viola closed her eyes and took another deep breath.

“All of it,” the prince said, his voice sounding amused.
