splashed over my chest and hardened my nipples. “You can put me down here,” I said. “Just need a smidgen of private timeplease.”

He leered at me, blank at first, then his eyes widened in realization. “Don’t be long.” Once out of the river, he studied the forest and thank goodness kept his back tome.

In haste, I relieved myself and cleaned up, never in a trillion years imagining I’d pee out in public in front of a hunk. Yep, that was what my life had cometo.

By the time I climbed out and joined Oryn, he took my hand in his and we marched toward the woods. I adored his overprotectiveness; something about it left me giddy. The morning sun beat on my shoulders, warming me, and birds sang in the distance. There wasn’t any sign of wolves. Perfect. The faint waft of pine floated on the breeze. If I didn’t know better, I could have mistaken the place forTerra.

Oryn sniffed the air and swung toward the upward slope of a ledge, alongside the forest on one side and the river on the other. We stayed to the grass, as opposed to foliage and rocks… those things would tear up myfeet.

“Thank you,” Isaid.

He stopped and glanced around before looking down at me. “We need to keep quiet and move fast,” he said. “But out of curiosity, are you thanking me for sex or keeping you safe?” Hesmirked.

I nudged his arm. “You’ll never know. Now let’smove.”

With a nod, he moved forward, tugging me alongside. Halfway up, a howl rang in the distance, and I flinched, bumping into Oryn’sside.

We rushed up, and panic gripped my chest. I glanced over my shoulder, expecting to see wolves chasing us. That was all we needed. Our options were to run deeper into the woods, where we’d be easy prey, or jump off the cliff into the river. Neither option uncoiled the growing dread in mygut.

A grunt burst from deep in the pineforest.

We moved faster, running now. I clasped an arm against my breasts, their bouncing movement distracting me—and clearly Oryn, who kept glancing myway.

Almost at the top, he quickened his steps. My breaths grew short and raspy. Wind tugged my hair, and despite the chill, sweat dripped down myback.

Up ahead, twenty feet away, two brown wolves emerged from the forest. One growled, the fur on its neck standing onend.

Oryn halted, one arm pushing me behind him. “Run to the cabin when I saygo.”

My gut dropped to my feet and my pulse skipped abeat.

When a howl came from behind us, I jerked around and faced another dark wolf skulking closer out of thewoods.

I shuddered as a strangled cry fell from mylips.
