Hunter put a round tube made from wood into his mouth as he counted down on one finger.Five. Four…

What were the crazy dwarves thinking, taking on murdering and pillaging scumbags?

Going mad myself, I armed myself with a rock, ready to pummel the filth below.

Three. Two. One.

Rocks launched through the air. One smashed at the foot of a pirate and he leaped into the air. Another hit the side of a cart, spooking the horses, and they bolted, carrying one wagon away.

“What the fuck?” cried a pirate.

A rock conked him in the head. Down he went. Hopefully, he was dead.

Two more pirates removed their swords from their sheaths.

Something whizzed through the air, striking a pirate in the neck. “What’s going on?” He stumbled around as if dizzy and then collapsed. A long, thin wooden shaft with a feather stuck out from his neck.

Hunter punched the air with a fist. He’d shot a drugged dart, like the ones the resistance had used to capture me.

“There they are, up there!” shouted one of the pirates. “Fucking greasy dwarves.”

A dagger struck the branch near Hunter’s head, and he descended the tree faster than a monkey.

“Who you calling ‘greasy’?” Rake roared, heaving another rock that hit one pirate in the chest, knocking him backward.

Ouch. That had to have broken a few of his ribs. The pirate held his side and staggered back, obviously injured.

Shifters inside the cages raged, rocking the wagons. The alarmed horses yanked against their harnesses, dragging the carts forward several paces. Frightened children howled even louder.

Both Hunter and Axe climbed down the rocks, weapons drawn.

“Get ’em!” one pirate shouted, pointing at the approaching dwarves.

“Cover them!” Teeny shouted to the remaining members of the group.

I didn’t need to be told twice. My hands were already loaded with the next batch of rocks. The dwarves and I pelted the pirates below, striking one in the back, making another lose his sword, and cracking a third on the head.

Hunter slashed at a fourth with a dagger but got kicked in the face and thrown backward. The pirate loomed over him, laughing. Three more descended upon Axe…hardly a fair fight.

Stuffing away my fear and burying a small rock into my cleavage, I moved to the edge of the hilltop.

“Hey!” I shouted, waving my arms in the air. “Looking for me?”

A couple of the pirates’ faces scrunched in confusion.

“Snow,” I said. “Stepdaughter of the witch in Tritonia. I bet she’d pay a handsome price for my return.”

At this news, one haggard-looking pirate who’d clearly had one too many days in the sun hitched up his pants.

Hunter snuck up on him, ending the pirate’s life with a knife to the throat.

“I’ll kill you for that,” the pirate’s comrade warned, twirling his sword, slashing the air.

Hunter jumped backward.

I nearly slipped as I scaled down the rock.

“No, Snow!” Teeny cried.
