“I’m not going without you,” I said, squeezing the handle of the bag.

Sorrow pinched Rumi’s face. “I’m needed here, child. Now go.”

She nodded at one of the men, and they dealt with Kelvin, trying to get the mountain of a man up on a horse, but he refused to even get to his feet, rocking and mumbling on the ground instead.

“Why can’t I go to the sea king?” I protested. “He’s our ally. If he hears his territory is being overrun by that witch, he’ll send his merarmy.”

The muscles in Rumi’s neck tightened. “All the roads to the sea are being watched by the witch’s spies.”

My stomach dropped as if I had dived off a cliff.Flipping hell. That was my only chance to save Tritonia from that evil witch.

Rumi turned and nodded to one of the caped crusaders, and he lifted her up, helping her climb the first horse in the row.

Once she was settled on her ride, she said, “We can’t risk you being apprehended again. You’re too valuable to us.”

“Valuable to who?” I pressed again.

I didn’t get any answers. An arrow burning with fire landed beside the horses, startling them, and the steed next to Rumi’s rose onto its hind legs.

“Shit,” said one of the men. “An ambush.”
