Shadow left my side to duel with a soldier, knocking him out and stealing his spear. He hurled the weapon at the king, but it bounced off his scaled shoulder and clanged on the stone.

Continuing his ascent, Flare reached the king’s wing, biting into the soft skin beneath the monarch’s arm. The dragon pounded his tail against his back, just missing Flare. Phantom’s teeth hooked into the leathery flesh of the dragon’s wing. An ear-piercing screech flew from the king, and he thrust his wing outward, flinging Phantom across the room.

My every limb was frozen with fear. But if I didn’t move soon, I’d be knocked over and crushed.

Flare slashed at the dragon’s arm, drawing blood. Moving swiftly, the king crashed his side into the wall, the impact propelling Flare into a wall as well. Bricks crumbled as the panther crashed to the ground.

The terror coursing through my veins tripled in speed. I had to move.Fucking move!If I didn’t, the panthers were about to meet their goddess.

The mirror in my cape rattled against me, and I pulled it out.

Show me to the king, it urged me.

Just as I’d predicted, the monarch lifted his front foot to crush Flare.

“No!” I shouted, tugging out the mirror and holding it upright at my old friend.

A bright light exploded from the glass, reflecting from every single shiny surface in the room, blinding the dragon, his soldiers, and the royal family.

Somehow, the light didn’t reach the panthers or me, allowing Shadow to take advantage of the disturbance and crawl beneath the king. Once there, he shoved the spear into the dragon’s armpit. Shrieks exploded from the king, booming in the throne room.

But that wasn’t enough to stop the mighty dragon, and his tail thrashed, hitting everything in its path, bringing down pillars and a wall. When the light faded, he shook his head and blinked, his raging eyes refocusing on me.

Heart slamming against my sternum, I glanced at the soldiers, expecting them to enter the fray and slay us before any of us injured their king further. None of them did a thing. Ready and waiting, they gripped their weapons tighter but didn’t intervene, as if it were against Draco custom.

Spear lodged in his flesh, the ruler backed up, searching for the enemy.

Shadow weaved beneath his legs, remaining hidden.Clever.Seizing hold of the spear, he twisted it back and forth, creating a greater wound.

The king’s head flew back, and he howled.

Flipping hell.I didn’t think we’d even stood this much of a chance. But clearly, the king had underestimated the panthers. Their strength and skill must have been why my stepmother collected them for her personal army.

Fire brewed in the dragon’s chest, clearly about to explode. Eyes narrowed in a deadly glare, he rounded on Flare, likely intent on finishing what he’d started.

“No!” I cried, bounding across the room, clutching the mirror. Magic fabricated a shield of glass with a polished handle for me to grip.

I lifted the mirror shield upright as I slid in front of Flare. Flames spewed across the front of my shield. Every muscle tensed in anticipation of my skin melting from my bones. Thank the sea god that searing pain did not grip me. Fire reflected off the glass in the form of shooting balls that smashed into the walls, scorching them.

People screamed, and I lowered my shield to survey the rest of the damage. The blaze had set the material of the king’s cape alight, consumed the throne room’s garden, lit the prince’s pyre, and had singed various soldiers and members of the court. Chaos reigned, and everyone screamed, smacking at their burning clothes or hair.

Flare shifted back into a human. “Fuck, sweetheart,” he said as I lifted him to his feet.

I, too, was amazed at how the mirror had fended off such powerful fire.

Foaming with rage, the king shrieked, lifting his front leg to crush us. Out of nowhere, Phantom latched on to the king’s wing again, drawing more blood, tearing a great gash in it. But the dragon shook Phantom off, knocking him into my shield, pushing Flare and me over. My shield flew from my grasp as we rolled across the floor.

Shadow collected me, lifting me to my feet. Phantom collected Flare, lifting his arm over his shoulder, dragging him in our direction.

Blood spattered the floor, leaking from a wound on the king’s heel. He limped, putting his weight on his good foot, then lifted into the air. The glass must have cut him.

Still, the remaining and unharmed soldiers failed to touch us. Perhaps only the king had the right to slaughter us and seek vengeance for his son.

Blusters from the king’s wings battered us in the enclosed space. Fire welled in his chest, preparing to rain upon us from above.

Damn it.We wouldn’t make it to the shield in time, and it wasn’t big enough to protect the four of us. But if my magic could cut through dragon’s skin and reflect fire, imagine what else it was capable of. Today, we were not going to die. I would not pass from this realm until I achieved my vengeance. My heart hurt that I had to harm my old friend. Unfortunately, he’d left me no choice.

“Close your eyes!” I shouted to the panthers.
