What had I done? My head swam with so many regrets, and each was icy cold, sending a shiver down my spine. They all revolved around Elyse, around myself for being such a jerk.

She was begging her father to let her finally cross over, to leave her mortal life behind. And something inside me stabbed through my heart. Her pleading ripped me apart.

Elyse had crawled into my soul from the first time we’d met, but I’d fought her all the way, battling against my emotions. I’d been fucking terrified. And the other gods were right. I’d spent too long running and never facing the truth. If I’d dealt with X when he’d first escaped the Underworld, we wouldn’t be here now.

“What if I can’t do it? What if I’m not enough?” she asked.

I almost stepped out of the shadows, my palms buzzing with the urgency to collect her into my arms, to fix my wrongs. To remind her she was enough and she always would be. To tell her I was tired of making excuses. To finally clean up the mess I’d created. And just thinking those things filled me with a new surge of energy.

Better yet, I’d show her. I had no plans of letting her go.

She stared out into the Elysian Fields, to where the rest of her family waved to her.

“If I don’t come with you, I won’t ever see you again, will I?” she asked her father.

The strength in her voice returned, and I knew then that her father had gotten through to her to keep fighting. And I owed him everything because he’d given me one last chance to get my head straight.

And the first thing I intended to fix was to prove myself to Elyse.
