“But you have one of those. Don’t you?” And were they deranged to say I was a goddess?

“Not here on Earth, we don’t,” Heracles said. “Not until now.”

I shook my head. “This means…”

Zeus and Heracles both looked at me. Hades and Ares came closer. Poseidon appeared at my back as if waiting for me to draw my own conclusions. Fucking gods and their rules.

“You all knew about this?” I asked, looking at all of them.

Hades shrugged his shoulders. Ares nodded. Poseidon glanced at Zeus.

“Thanks, guys,” I said, disgusted. “Thanks a ton.”

“What about we get out there and kick some ass?” Ares asked.

“You think I can do this?” I asked Ares, waiting to see the confirmation on his face, to hear the solid words that made me believe all this insanity was somehow real.

“It’s your battle, Elyse,” he said, glancing over his shoulder at X, held in place by Zeus. “This is your game.”

And he was right. If I was a goddess, one of Sanctuary, then I could do this. Because X was stepping right on my toes.

And I’d looked out for the humans before. Well, now it all made sense. Why Heracles had trained my family. Why I’d always felt so much for the humans, even though I’d never fit in. Why I’d felt like something was missing until I met the gods and started dating them.

Why my power grew stronger so fast every time I died. And why I was such a threat to X. I stared at the monster Zeus would never finish. He simply held him for now in an invisible grip. It would have been nice if Zeus just finished Death, but he didn’t work that way apparently.

Suddenly, in a brilliant flash of light, Apollo manifested before me, and heat radiated through my chest because I’d missed him so much it hurt.

“What are you doing here?” I rushed over to hug him as he beamed at me.

Apollo wrapped his arms around me, his fingers digging into my back, his hunger obvious. He glanced at Zeus. “Loophole. She’s not a human, so the rule doesn’t apply.”

“You were waiting at those gates for the moment this happened, weren’t you?” Zeus chided him.

Apollo chuckled and kissed my head. For the first time in too long, I belonged, like this was home, like I had my whole family with me.

“I missed you,” he whispered.

“God, you have no idea.”

He left a trail of kisses down my nose. His lips brushed mine, not soft or innocently, but intense and fiery, promising so much more now he was back home.

Someone cleared his throat, and Apollo broke our kiss. “Let’s kick some ass,” he snarled when he let me go.

The other guys standing around us all threw their fists up in the air, a battle cry resounding around us.

Oh, boy. X broke free from Zeus’s invisible hold and I was ready. I was in for a hell of a lot of fun.
