Chapter 5

Meira

My eyes flutter open, and I’m falling. Panic slams into my chest. I shudder, my arms jutting out to catch myself. Except my wrists are bound together with rope.

“Settle down,” the Alpha growls in my ear, his arm looped around my waist as I realize I’m hanging over his shoulder while he climbs down from my treehouse.

He reaches the ground, and I slide down his body until my shoes touch soil. Our faces are so close, I can see the silvery flecks in his irises catching the sunlight. My heartbeat rages in my chest.

I hate his quirk of a smile as my breasts drag down his chest. He may have the body of a god, all naked and insanely sexy, but I want nothing to do with him.

“Untie me,” I hiss, jutting out my bound wrists to him. “I can’t believe you tied me up while I slept.”

In reply, he reaches over and grabs the rope dangling from my bonds, pulling me behind him. “Let’s move.”

“Are you fucking serious? A leash? I’m not a dog.”

“You’re my little wolf,” he says with a small smile as he glances over his shoulder.

My feet stumble after him, and I’m seething on the inside. “Last night, I actually thought you might be an okay wolf. I even hated you less. But now, I loathe you more than the Shadow Monsters roaming these woods.”

He looks at me, his lips pinched. “That’s a lot of hatred.”

I tug against him, but he doesn’t give an inch, just hauls me into fast steps. Last night, I should have shoved him out of my treehouse.

“Just behave, and this will be over in no time,” he suggests, like he’s doing me a favor.

Fuck him. I fight him the whole way, making him drag me and work for every inch.

We’ve been walking for hours, ducking low branches, trampling prickly shrubs, and stepping over dead logs. He brought with us several apples, but still my stomach growls for food.

He even permitted me to relieve myself behind a tree. While he held the rope, of course. The shame. I will make him pay.

Coupled with that, how can we not have come across any undead yet? The sun sits directly above us when we finally step out of the thick woods.

He looks left and right down an old worn road, as if something is meant to be waiting for him. Overgrown grass and weeds press in at the edges, swaying in the breeze.

“Did they forget about you?” I say in a mocking tone. “So much for the pack who cares. Seems you’re just another shifter who doesn’t matter to the vile Alpha who’s abandoned you out here. Is he really worth risking your life for?”

He stares at me, and those blue eyes flicker with the faintest smear of something dark. Something dangerous.

The threatening look leaves me trembling. This shifter carries power.

“Keep quiet and move fast. Or I’ll carry you the whole way, and you will not be conscious.” The gravelly edge in his voice delivers his promise. He’s worried about how vulnerable he is out here to the undead.

He swings left and tugs me behind him roughly.

I contemplate screaming and making a ruckus, but there are no guarantees the Shadow Monsters are even close enough to hear me. And I believe him when he says he will knock me out.

We walk onward, past lofty pines with the sun heavy on our backs. I suck in a harsh breath as a warm breeze swooshes through my hair. I swallow over my dried throat, and the muscles in my thighs ache from the steep downhill descent.

Twigs snap to my right, and I twist around to find a deer staring at us from the woods. The shifter guiding me doesn’t even look at the animal, just sniffs the air.

“I may have no choice but to do as you say right now, but don’t think that I am in any way obedient.” When he first caught me, we encountered an undead by the river. I should have done more to let the Shadow Monster take this wolf. Slowed down. Fallen down. Something. But his words terrified me because the wolves would return. They’d catch my scent on him and never stop hunting me.

He looks over at me and considers my words. “If you follow my instructions, you will be safe. There’s nothing for you to fear.”

I want to laugh. I lift my bound wrists to prove my point. “And secondly, your Alpha is sending me to another pack, so don’t lie to me.”
