As Third to the Alpha of Ash Wolves, I can’t lose my head. Especially not when the Second is a fucking idiot. It frustrates me that Dušan keeps Mad in such a role, when this isn’t the first time shit went south from his involvement. Just because he’s his step-brother doesn’t mean he’s deserving of the role.

Clenching my fists, I march outside and weave between the homes until I reach the edge of the fortress, ready to scream. Sucking in fresh air, I try to calm my racing pulse.

My head roars, while my heart yearns for Meira.

Great way to keep my head screwed on straight.

“Lucien,” a male calls from behind me.

With a deep sigh, I turn to find Chase greeting me with a bow. He’s a Beta who manages all festivities and pack runs. He’s not a large shifter by any means, but his devotion to the pack is unchallenging.

“Everything ready for tonight?” I ask.

“Yes. I wanted to show you where we set up the circuit for the races. Make sure you approve.”

The circuit is used for the younger wolves, the newly turned who aren’t ready to run with the Alphas through the woods within the settlement.

He has a heart of gold, and even being in his late twenties, he lacks the confidence to make his own decisions. “You know what? I’ll trust you.”

He gazes at me with concern in his eyes.

I laugh and slap him on the shoulder. “You’ve done this how many times already?”

“At least a dozen,” he says.

“Well, then under your guidance, this will be the greatest one yet.”

He steadies himself and gives a nod. Then he’s gone. I turn back to looking out to the Carpathian Mountains ahead of me.

Meira won’t leave my thoughts…but I never expected any female to ever affect me in such a way. Because after losing my mate, Cataline, I shattered into hundreds of pieces and vowed to never find love again.
