I sigh loud enough for effect. “Why are you grilling me? Isn’t this place our sanctuary?”

He chuckles. “Why don’t you come with me? I can help you out,” he deadpans.

Setting me down on my feet, he drags his gaze from me to the path around the ground floor of the castle to where the houses are located. His expression is neutral, while my stomach is exploding with nervous butterflies.

I made a mistake—this gorgeous Viking definitely knows who I am. I see it in his eyes, in the slight tick in his jaw when he stares at me. He’s about to take me back to Dušan.

“What’s your name?” I demand to know, lifting my chin, all for bravado.

He spears a hand through his hair, narrowing his eyes at me, as though he sees right through to my thoughts. “I’m Bardhyl.”

My gaze automatically swings to his powerful bicep, at the way the fabric pulls tautly over his strong chest at the slightest movement. My heart flutters at the sight.

I mentally shake my head—except my wolf is in my chest, pushing to get closer. Just what I need! She acts all coy and lusty while still living inside me, but what will she be like when she comes out?

The more I look at this shifter, the more I noticed how handsome he is. My body screams out for him. My eyes do as well. So does my wolf. But he’s just another minion to the Alpha.

I search the depth of his eyes for sympathy. When he pulls me by the hand toward the houses, I bite my cheek, reigning in my anger.

“Where are you taking me?” I try to use my sweetest voice, hoping he’ll find it in his heart to release me.

The smile he offers me melts me on the spot. His eyes seem to glint in the sunlight. With a strong nose and jawline, he is captivating. But he says nothing.

By the time we reach the courtyard with houses on either side of us, the sun is heavy on our backs. Around us, shifters are chatting, walking about, doing whatever it is they do. But panic is squeezing the hell out of my heart.

I trip over an uneven stone, and he catches my arm. “Please tell me where you’re taking me. I want to return to my home. My parents will be looking for me.”

He pauses before me, all strength and heat—dangerous. Arching a brow, he leans in close again, leaving me completely breathless. I shouldn’t let his nearness get to me, but the image of him all over me is turning me on. “I adore the way you try to lie to me.”

His grip doesn’t let up, and suddenly we’re flying across the cobblestones.

“Lie?” I huff, fighting to tear my hand from his iron grip. There’s almost something intimate in the way he looks at me, as if he might sweep me up off my feet and carry me into the woods. I swallow, not completely averse to the idea…Wait! What am I thinking? Of course, I don’t want that.

He turns and wrenches me across the open courtyard. I stumble behind him as we swing left between two homes, then turn left and then right, small stone houses all around us. Voices and cries of children come from inside the homes, as well as the succulent aromas of food cooking.

In seconds, he has my back pressed to the front door of a smaller home, his body trapping me. “I’m a fair man, and I owe you a kiss back.” He smiles like a deviant before kissing me softly, teasing me.

I should push him back, or drive my knee into his groin. Instead, I’m losing myself to his affection, and he makes me forget all other thoughts.

My hands desperately clutch his tee, and I heave myself up on tippy-toes, taking his tongue in my mouth. Heavens, he feels incredible, tastes so delicious and masculine.

I groan against him as my whole body tenses. His lips drag over my cheek and to my neck just below my earlobe. His tongue flicks out against the tender flesh. I shiver beneath him. Dirty images fill my mind of what his mouth would feel like all over my body.

“I hate that I have to stop,” he whispers.

The door behind me suddenly opens, and I’m falling backward into a dark room. I cry out, reaching for him, but I land on my ass as he stands in the doorway, grinning down at me. He grabs the door and shuts it, then he’s gone.

“What the fuck?!”

It isn’t long before the faint scent of floral perfume tickles my nose.

I freeze.

I’m not alone here.
