Page 17 of Make Me Love You

“Sure,” I say slowly. Not wanting to go and not really liking this new cold version of her. Her eyes won’t meet mine and her jaw is tight. Her lips clenched. Even her spine is rigidly tense.

I sit up and look for my clothes and she jumps and runs out of the room. “Just go ahead and let yourself out. I’ll see you later, Rafe.”

“Sure, right,” I mumble under my breath. I dress quickly and stalk out the door with the shower running in the background.

I head home and spend the day confused and wondering if I’m ever gonna see her again. If I’m ever gonna hold her in my arms while she wraps around me, sending us both to a stratosphere of pleasure.

It hurts, goddammit. It hurts fucking bad. I told her I love her and she never said it back. Never said anything about how good it was.

That’s telling. The woman usually doesn’t have problems voicing her feelings. But she wouldn’t say anything this time.

I could feel our connection. I know I could. Why didn’t she tell me she has feelings for me? Because she doesn’t a niggling voice whispers in the back of my head.

I can’t sit here any longer. I stand and head into the bar. It’s early but I can get in and get some paperwork done.

But I spend all morning staring at the wall in my office until I open at noon. The first guys in the door grin and slap me on the back. Then Marissa comes in, smirking at me. “I hear you melted the ice princess.”

“Where did you hear that?”

“It’s all over town. Everybody’s talking about you two. Wondering if someone finally caught you in their pretty little snare.”

I shrug and the words pour out like ash on my tongue. “Nope, still fancy free. No woman’s ever gonna tie me down.”

And it’s the damn honest to god truth. Because if I can’t have that woman, no other woman can ever take her place.

But I smile and serve drinks the rest of the night. Even smiling at the sexy blond that was in weeks ago flirting with me.
