“I can wait until she has enough coordination not to make it sound like that.”

There’s a knock at the door. “That must be Ruth. Clean that up, daddy.”

He salutes me. “Yes, ma’am.”

I open the door and giggle. “Have you two been at it again?”

Ruth slams in the door. “He is a maniac. He’s driving me nuts.”

I roll my eyes at Jeremiah. “He’s your friend. You deal with this.”

He stands up and saunters over. “What did he do now?”

“He gave me a ticket. For not cleaning my sidewalk well enough.”

I giggle. “Honey, they’ll dismiss it. Nobody pays for that kind of stuff.”

“They better,” she grumbles. “I can’t afford to keep paying for these damn tickets.”

My ears perk up. “How many has he given you?”

“At least two a week for the last month. He’s killing me.”

I shoot Jeremiah a look. “Fine. I’ll go find him and talk to him. But maybe if you just followed the law he wouldn’t keep giving you tickets.”

Ruth glares at her brother when he walks out the door. “I don’t know how you can put up with him.”

“It’s got it’s perks,” I smirk.

“Ugh.” Ruth holds her stomach. “Please don’t. I just ate. That kind of talk makes my stomach roll.”

I laugh and ask her to join me for a coffee. I don’t know what Jeremiah’s gonna say to his friend but I hope he can fix this.

Ruth is a good friend and I don’t like seeing her this stressed. I hand her the baby and she cuddles her to her chest. “You’re just what I need, right, Harley? Your auntie’s got some advice for you. Stay away from men. They’re not worth it.”

I study her shadowed eyes. There are dark bags under them.

If this is because of Jeremiah’s friend he better fix this. And if he doesn’t I will. Nobody messes with my friends.

If I have to lay out another man who deserves a good slug, well, I still have a good enough arm to make it count.

And I will make it hurt. He’s crossed the wrong woman this time. He’s gonna pay for hurting Ruth.

I’ll make sure of it. My daughter’s godmother deserves a good life free from troubles. And that seems to be the new deputy’s middle name.

But he’s never met trouble like me. Maybe I’ll sic Hattie on him. He deserves to suffer.
