“What an idiot I am,” I grumble, picking up my sandwich and taking a bite that tastes like cardboard in my mouth.
“Well at least we can agree on that.”
“I really fucked up, didn’t I?”
Amanda’s normally cheery face sobers up quick and that tells me all I need to know. “I think you know the answer to that.”
“I can’t leave her. I love that damn stubborn woman.”
Jamie laughs. “Do me a favor. If you want to use those words, make sure I can watch. I want to see what she does!”
“Ha-ha! Funny. What do I need to do to fix this?”
“You need to tempt her. Slowly and carefully. Because if she thinks you’re pushing her, she’ll run.”
“Yeah, I know.” That’s what happened that night. At least I think so. I pushed her and she was already second-guessing what happened.
“You know we have girls night at Rafe’s bar on Monday, right?”
“I did not know that. So?”
“It’s also karaoke night this week.” A wicked grin tilts her lips and my heart sinks to my toes.
“No. No way. I haven’t sang anything in years.”
“We both know you have a great voice. You just need the right incentive. Isn’t winning Harvey back enough?”
I take a deep breath, closing my eyes like I’m in pain. “Fine. What do you want me to do?”
“I thought you’d never ask. This is what you need to do.”
I wince when she outlines her plan for karaoke night. I’m about to out myself to the whole fucking town and if she rebuffs me it’s gonna burn.
But since I already left her with the mess the first time, it’s only fair that I suffer too.
