When he took a seat next to me, the butterflies in my stomach fluttered furiously. It was the effect Dallas had on me or the two hot dogs and loaded hamburger.

“Got here about an hour ago. I had to get my girl ready to come here. It took much persuasion since she doesn’t like to be around many people.” He told me with a proud smile on his face and I hid my face when it dropped with disappointment.

“Oh, you never mentioned you had a girl when we talked.”

Dallas scooted closer to me, which was highly inappropriate since he was already spoken for, and I inched away as discomfort blanketed me. “You’re going to love her. She’s beautiful, with reddish hair and the biggest brown eyes you've ever seen.” He stopped talking and tried to meet my eyes as he moved his head. “Char? You okay?”

“I’m fine, Dallas. I’m happy for you.” When I replied curtly, I think he caught on, judging by the bewilderment written on his perfectly chiseled face.

He arched an eyebrow as a half-grin developed in the corner of his mouth. “My girl is hyper all the time, especially when I give her treats.”

I hummed at his answer and sarcastically replied, “I can just imagine what treats you’re talking about too, Dallas Marquez.”

There was a moment of awkward silence, until he said, “Ah, there she is.”

I didn’t see anyone around and didn’t have a clue who he was referring to until an over-exuberant pit bull jumped on him, knocking him on his back. Slapping my palm over my face, I was overcome with embarrassment, never thinking he was talking about this gorgeous, sweet pit bull pup. “This is her, Dallas?”

“Yeah, Char, this is Johnny. I named her after one of my favorite wannabe dudes.” He chuckled and wrestled with Johnny a bit before he sat back up. “Go get a hot dog from Uncle Austin. I want to talk to this gracious lady here.”

Dallas jumped to his feet, never taking his eyes off his angel girl but offering his hand to help me to my feet. With both hands, he gripped my wrists and pulled me close. “Char. All I thought about the entire year was you and seeing you right here made my night. Not just my night, my freaking year. What I couldn’t tell you over the phone is I’m kind of taken with you and want to be with you—like, really be with you. Maybe as a girlfriend, maybe eventually as a lover. You know what? Forget all that.” He inhaled and exhaled, while turning his head. “This is the best you’ll get from me.” He paused once more and reached into his pocket, pulling out a ring? Whoa! I didn’t see this coming in a million years. “Charlene Dixon, will you marry me and put up with my shenanigans for the rest of our lives?”

Everything from the scenery to the fireworks had frozen in time. I stood before Dallas Marquez, about ready to do something I dreamt about for so long. Not the marriage part, just kissing him. But you know, there is no way in hell I was going to decline his proposal. I couldn’t wait to be Lieutenant Charlene Marquez. Mrs. Charlene Marquez had a delightful sound to it, as well.
