As far as anyone can see, Levi didn’t fear death, and taking a life was too easy for him. My life flashed before me, but because of my hesitancy and how long the Napa Sheriff’s department was taking, each member rode off quickly. I was frozen, and every word that escaped his mouth was muffled until Sherman broke me out of my funk. “Larry? He is heading to the Weatherly Vineyard. How in the hell did he know where Emilie was being taken?”

I moved my head slowly in his direction. I am stunned now. Yes, how in the fuck did he know? “We have a mole, Sherman.”

Sherman laughed uncomfortably, “W-what are you talking about?”

I gritted my teeth. “We have a mother fucking mole, Sherman.”

“Hey Braeden,” I asked over the intercom.

“Yeah, boss?” He responded, and I heard him hemming when I groaned. “Sorry, Grimes. What’s up? Is Emilie okay?”

Emilie spoke up, smacking in our ears. “Yeah, I’m fine, Mr. Bee. Just eating some whoppers. They’re kind of melty. Want some?”

“No, girl. I’m good, just ate the entire bag of Skittles you gave me earlier.” We both chuckled at Braeden’s response. He was a good guy and the only one from the Chrome Poppies I trusted. His hatred for Levi ran as deep as mine.

“Do you think we’re ahead of the Chrome Poppies or behind them?” I asked Braeden, yet there was only radio silence until he responded a moment later.

“I have a tracker on Bear’s bike. They are about five miles ahead of us. We need to kick it into high gear to get to Napa before those assholes do.”

I saluted, not that he’d see me, and responded, “Affirmative. Emilie! Hold on to your skinny butt, we are going to be hauling ass the rest of the way.”

She raised her little hand, giving me the thumbs up. “Jensen?”

“Yeah, Emilie.”

“Can I live with you instead?” I choked back, uncertain how to answer that except with honesty, because this child wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Emilie. I am but a stranger to you. Your Aunt Janiece and Uncle Jeff are eager to see you. They have a great house, a lot of acres to run around in and a couple of dogs. Emilie, it’s not safe living with me. With your aunt and uncle, you’ll be safe, and loved, and you’ll want for nothing.” I knew nothing about the Weatherly family, except for what Ezekiel told me. Speaking of whom, he was calling me via Bluetooth. I turned off the intercom and answered the call.

“Franklin just got back and had to take this kid out of Levi’s clutches. Do you want to explain what happened?”

“She chewed me a new asshole about it already. I don’t need to hear it from you.”

Ezekiel hummed at my response, and a loud crash nearly made me lose control of the bike. “Sorry about that. I was taking a sheet of cookies out of the oven, and they fell onto the floor. Anyway, I didn't call you to chide you about the carelessness with Emilie or about my baking fiasco. Franklin has shifted into a fly, so you could say she is a proverbial fly on the wall.”

“I assume she discovered something juicy?”

“You know the big guy with Detective McCrae?”

“Yeah?”

“Franklin witnessed the arrest go wrong and because there was no warrant, McCrae had to let Shields and the rest of the men go. However, she was buzzing around Levi’s bike and overheard Detective Sherman, the big guy, give Levi a shorter route to get to Napa quicker than you guys.”

My body slumped, and I was speechless.

“I did some digging around about this Sherman guy. He was part of the Akicita Antelope motorcycle club and left when they found out he was telling the guys at the Chrome Poppies their plans. Though, he’s a hypocrite, he was Ozzy Dillon’s partner when they stole the money from Levi Shields.”

“Wait! How did you get all of this information?”

“These monitors in my house are not just dust collectors. Dude, I have phone records and texts. Which I got after I sneaked into Sherman and McCrae’s hotel room last night.”Ezekiel laughed maniacally, like a villain in some cheesy comedy. “So, your attention needs to be on Detective Brent Sherman, otherwise known at Chubs, as well as the Chrome Poppies men.”

This whole situation just got even uglier upon hearing this news. Not only did I need to protect Emilie and Braeden. I needed to cover Lawrence, as well. I groaned and pondered if I should warn him. But then again, Lawrence was pretty intuitive and I’m sure he senses Brent Sherman isn’t this good guy he’s portraying. I had another thought about why he was playing both sides, was he undercover, as well? Or was he just a wolf in sheep’s clothing?
