“Guilty,” she said with a laugh.

He grinned too, his hand sliding down her shoulder to claim her fingers. “I remember you looking up into the night sky and making a wish on all the pricks of light, even the planets.”

Clarissa smiled, that memory as clear in her mind as if it had happened last night. “I love the stars and planets and heavens.”

“I remember the conversation that night being real serious,” he added, the moment turning just as sober. “I remember how sad you were that your grandmother had died, and I remember you saying now she was up in the stars, watching over you.”

He reached past her to open the door, but he slid his hand into hers as she lowered her arm from the crook of his elbow. The strength in his grip made her pause, and she looked up at him.

Mistake, her mind screamed at her. Not her first mistake today either. In a tender moment like this, with his eyes sparking with attraction like that…

Clarissa was in serious trouble with this cowboy.

“I remember you being an amazing kisser,” he whispered, lowering his head toward hers. He paused only a few inches away, giving her a chance to deny him. “Can I kiss you, Clarissa?”

She’d never been able to tell him yes, though “all right” and “okay” were forms of the word.

Tonight, she reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers along the side of his face, guiding his mouth straight to hers, and said, “Yes.”

Her heartbeat stayed in a nice, steady rhythm, because kissing Spencer Rust had always felt like the most natural thing in the world. It felt like coming home.

It felt like exactly the risk she’d needed to take to get what she’d always wanted.
