“Devana, what were you thinking? I told you not to come to the meeting.” I knew damn well my first words shouldn’t be a command, but what else would she expect. I was Alpha, and my word was law, no ifs ands or buts about it. Her face scrunched up with a frown as she tried to sit up.

“If... if I didn’t, this entire Pack…”

“Vana! This is what I was trying to tell you! They would have killed you even though you were saving their Pack member’s life,” Dali interrupted. I looked back as the Hunter snatched her arm away from Max and gritted her teeth as she rushed forward. I growled, and she stopped just two feet away from us. I couldn’t stop the growl, but I didn’t even try it. We were not like her people that stood by while others died. “Vana?” Dali said as she looked between her sister and me.

“Dali, I told you not to come here. I’m fine.” I felt Devana’s tiny hand on my forearm, making me take my glare away from her sister.

“If I hadn’t shown up, they would have killed you for helping their Pack member! They wouldn’t even have heard you out! You put yourself in danger to help people who wouldn’t do shit for you.”

“Dali!” Devana snapped. She sat up, but I placed a hand on her to keep her from getting up. “Dax, let me…”

“No.”

“But Dax she…”

“No,” I said again and turned to face the Hunter. I looked over at Max as he rubbed at the burns on his hands. “Listen, Hunter. I do not appreciate you assuming shit about my Pack. We do not leave people to die or kill them for no reason. You do not get to come here and be self-righteous about shit the way YOUR people have let all species down over the years. You do not know me, and I sure as hell don’t care to know you, but your sister is my MATE, and I would never let anyone, not even my Pack, get close to killing her. So, what’s going to happen here is you will go with Max to my office while I make sure my MATE isn’t hurt. This is not a request. It is a fucking order.” I bit out each word as slow as I could. I held on tight to my wolf. I could feel that my wolf wanted to lash out at anyone that came close to Devana at this moment. Max understood what was up, but I saw the defiance on Dali’s face. Before she could open her mouth, and Devana managed to get up, Max moved. He had the Hunter by her waist and hauled her out of the door. I caught the flash of heat in her eyes before the irritated mask slipped back into place.

“Daxton, we don’t have time for all of this.” I turned back to look down at my frowning Mate. Her eyes glittered with irritation, but I knew my own burned with it.

“I told you not to come to my Pack meeting. Not only did you not listen, but you could have been fucking hurt in the process.” I couldn’t help but to check her over once more. I knew about the Mating bond and how it can cloud the mind initially, but that was after the mark.

“Yeah, well, you can’t claim a Mate and then tell her she isn’t welcomed! It doesn’t matter anyway because we have a problem, a huge problem.” I was about to give her the many reasons why her ass should not have been there when I felt the fear coming off her body.

“The demon has already begun to infest my Pack,” I growled. I stared into those eyes that flashed from green to hazel and brown before she looked away.

“Yes. Yes, it has, but that isn’t what concerns me the most. The demon we face is aCadejo.”

“The Black Dog?” I asked, confused as to why she believes that it’s so bad.

“That is just a simple term. I know that you are older and may hold more knowledge of supernatural things, but you do not know demons. Not like a Hunter. This…thisCadejois here to cause disease, destruction, confusion, chaos and death. Which one will it go with at the end? No one knows. It may appear as a dog but do not mistake it for what it truly is, evil walking. If aCadejopossessed a wolf shifter, that means it can now walk like a man. It will no longer need to hide in the shadows of night to whisper its poison. It now has a voice and a willing soul that will feed it the power of life.”

As Devana spoke, her words slowly clicked into place about what was happening and what would happen to my Pack. I remember learning about this Black Dog that I took for a joke long ago, just something said in passing. Cassandra once told me it was lucky that my family was blessed with all Alphas.Seven Alpha children born to one family will contain the gift that will push the darkness of the Black Dog back into the pit.A prophecy that was spoken about and confirmed by the Hunter. A prediction that didn’t seem as if it genuinely meant anything other than calming the fears of one family being too powerful. No one has ever seen thisCadejo, but I can’t deny that Devana’s words rang true. Unfortunately, none of us ever took stock in those words because what canine could stand up to the apex predator? What type of Dog could compare itself to a Werewolf?

“Tell me what I need to know to protect my Pack. Tell me everything I need to know to protect all of my people. I need the truth, all of it, and whatever it is you aren’t telling me. I can’t have you at my back if I can’t even trust you. I should be able to trust my Mate.” I growled. This moment right here and now would tell me if she would stand at my side or be just like the Hunters of old. Devana held my gaze, but I wasn’t about to back down from what I asked. I needed to know what she knows and what exactly she is trying to keep hidden from me.

“Let me tell you of the vision,” She said softly.

“You had another?” That was possible, but that isn’t the thing she was keeping from me. My wolf could taste it. We could feel it.

“Yes, but before I tell you of that one, let me tell you of the very first one.” I leaned away as she maneuvered herself up. I could sense her fear, apprehension, and resolve. Her cat-like eyes hardened, and she sucked in a breath as she began telling me of a vision of a wolf with violet eyes that turned crimson as he slaughtered his entire Pack.

Ifelt it when the connection broke with one of the shifters in the Rayne pack. It wasn’t one I spent most of my time working on, but another. It was one of the older shifters that could have been an addition to my army. I stood up from the kneeling position and kicked over the bowl of blood I used to see through the eyes of the shifter. The dark, now black blood pooled on the ground, and I watched it spread until it hit the arm of the shifter I used to fill it. I didn’t know what it was about this wolf that her blood gave this spell such a boost of power, but I would find out.

“A…Alpha…can…can I…” My lips pulled back in disgust at the female shifter. Her long black hair was matted and knotted in places. Her once rich brown skin seemed to have dulled, and the defiance in her eyes was now gone. I liked her defiant, but I wanted her broken. I didn’t understand the feelings I had when I am around this wolf, which always angered me every time I used her for this purpose. I narrowed my eyes at her, and she glanced away quickly, but I saw the spark in those lavender eyes.

“Clean this mess up and then tell the Pack females it’s time to move. We need to go and free more wolves from the service of this False Alpha, but first, we need to deal with the Pack in that state. Make sure those females in this new Pack know the rules this time, Maeze. You know what the price for you will be when they fuck up,” I growled.

“Y.. yes, Alpha. I understand,” She whispered. I cracked a smile because I heard the distaste in her voice and the slight growl she tried to cover. That just means she isn’t as broken as I thought. That was good. Her blood connected toAbadozuistronger than any other, but I didn’t know why. I was close to getting my answer to that question. She just needed a little more alone time with her Alpha. I bared my teeth at her before I turned on my heel and stepped out of the windowless room. I felt the crawling, stinging sensation along my skin and smelled the foulness of the demon before I heard its voice in my mind.

“Aeron, we have a problem.”

The deep voice still scraped against my senses, and I felt as though blades stabbed me repeatedly in my brain. But it didn’t matter because it was well worth it.

“The Hunter. Yes, I saw her, but she is just one. We are many,”I answered. As I walked, I caught the eye of Keys, my Beta that was once an Alpha. It didn’t take much for him to see who to follow, and I didn’t have to do a damn thing. He spoke to another wolf, preparing the Pack to move, but he joined me as I walked out of this rundown house and into the woods. He knew not to speak until I spoke first. That was the first lesson he learned, and it didn’t need any repeating. His left eye still hadn’t grown back, and I knew that it would not.

“Yessss wolf. I give you the gift of my power so that you could right the wrongs of your species. Show the purest wolves that you are the True Alpha. All I ask for is one thing from you once you gut the white wolf. One of the great Alphas that stands in the way of your greatness.”

The words the demon spoke sparked a fire deep inside of me. But, of course, there was always a give and take when dealing with demon kind. I would fulfill my destiny by sacrificing the cursed bloodline of a family of Alphas.
