He didn't need a romantic connection.

Not that she'd be a bad choice.

Nope.

"Not gonna go there."

His cell buzzed from the center console of his truck. The message was from his partner. There was a new security install job needing his immediate attention.

Good thing.

He needed an excuse to leave the women's house. Not sure why he felt protective of her. He knew it wasn't because of the job, he'd done hundreds just like it. Maybe because he knew a little about her background and why she wanted the security but it wasn't and shouldn't be his business. He hadn't even had the chance to meet her in person.

Wyatt watched the neighbor kid help her unload all her belongings and then saw her stop and look toward his vehicle briefly.

Hesitantly, he drove off to his next job after she'd gone inside.

Maybe he could just pass back by there on his way home. He wouldn't have to make his presence known but he'd feel better checking in. She lived in a pretty good part of town but he also knew the area wasn't the problem. Something about an ex.

His cell rang this time.

"Hey Dane, what's up?"

His partner called to check in.

"Yep I'm heading through town now to the address you sent for the new install."

He was pretty sure he had all the equipment in the back of his truck already so he didn't need to go back to the office first.

Then his partner asked about the last job.

"Yeah I was still there when she got there, but not on the property, I was in my truck parked across the street."

"She must have thought you were a weirdo because she called the office asking about outside cameras."

"Really? I wasn't stalking at all, I literally got done right before she got there. I'd just climbed in my truck when she pulled in the driveway. Then I sat and watched. I guess maybe if she saw me, that freaked her out a bit. I sure didn't mean to though."

" I don't think she was mad, just on guard is all. She's been through a lot of shit I know she's tired of having to start over all the time."

"Yeah, I can't imagine having to live that way. So, she wants cameras outside too?"

"She does. Can you swing back by there yet tonight if it's not too late?"

"Can do. You want to call her and let her know?"

"Yes, I'll give her a heads up. Do you need any equipment? I can probably meet you and drop some off."

"No, I'm good. I stocked my truck yesterday. As long as you don't give me a third job today, I'll be good. I'll fill up again in the morning. I'll give you a shout tonight when I'm done. Later."

So, now he had a legitimate reason for going back to her house. Even though he was probably the reason she was a little bit more paranoid. He felt bad but not completely, if he was being honest. He felt the need to keep her safe.

Who knows what that was really about. He’d been a loner most of his life and wasn’t about to change now. Anyway, why would he want to take on someone with that kind of baggage? As if he didn’t’ have enough of his own.
