Okay, so maybe he did get it.

“So,do you believe in love at first sight?” Jordon never did. But it was different with Lacey. She was like an itch he couldn’t scratch. The more he was around her, the more he wanted to be around her.

“Well it’s funny you bring that up. My parents will swear ‘til the cows come home that they were in love from the first moment they laid eyes on each other, but I’ve always tried to be a little more realistic about life. I do believe, though, that nobody ever plans to fall in love—it just seems to happen when you least expect it. What about you?”

“Same as you, I guess. But I never really had anyone in my life giving me the kind of example your parents gave you. I think when you find the right one, maybe you just know.” And he was quite sure he knew she was the one.

“I wasn’t completely honest with you before and I need to come clean about it. I just hope you won’t be too mad. I don’t want this to be a start to something great between us and have me screw it all up.”

“Okay…I’m listening.” She solidified her stance by crossing her arms over her chest.

“This morning when I told you I didn’t remember what happened between the two of us after we got back to your apartment…”

“No! Are you kidding me? You lied about that?”

Shit, shit, shit.

“I’m really sorry. No, don’t go.” He reached for her when she tried to walk off the porch, hoping she would hear him out.

“Seriously, this is horrifying.” Her hands covered her face and his first reaction was to wrap her in his arms and hold her tight.

“I don’t want you to be horrified, really. I am beyond sorry I lied about it—truly, I am. But oh man Lacey, it was an awkward moment and I panicked. You acted embarrassed and like you hoped it didn’t happen so when you said you remembered nothing, I just played along. Only I do remember. I can’t get it out of my head. It was amazing.”

Lacey raised her head. “You’re being serious with me?”

“Cross my heart, scout’s honor.” He made an x figure over his chest and held up his fingers like a salute.

“I was horribly embarrassed—even more so, now. But I think I’m a little disappointed, too. I mean, obviously we had done something but the more I thought about it, the more bummed I was that I didn’t remember. I wouldn’t say that I’m the worldly type or anything but I’d like to think I learned a thing or two over the years.”

Jordon squeezed her a little harder. “Well, I’d be more than willing, let’s say for research’s sake, to have a do-over and we can repeat everything you don’t remember. We kind of missed out on that steak dinner tonight at my place, even though your mom’s cooking was amazing. Instead of heading to your apartment tonight, maybe we can go back to my house—so we don’t have to barricade the door with a chair?”

She laughed but quickly agreed. “I tell ya, I never thought I’d ever find myself in a cowboy’s arms.”

As they walked together toward his truck, Jordon vowed to do whatever he could to keep her there too.

The End
