“So, tell me. Did you even know those girls you two went home with last night?”

Mason looked up from feeding his face.

“Yeah. I keep forgetting you don’t know everyone from around here, but I went to school with Jenna—the one I was with.”

Jordon could see a smirk cross Mason’s face.

“You could say we had long-overdue unfinished business. Kaleb only met her roommate, Mandy, last night but it looked like he got along well enough.”

“Seems so—what about the third one? What’s her name?”

Mason’s mouth dropped open when he looked up at Jordan.

“A third? When did you see her?” Jordon knew none of those four had a clue the third roommate was even there.

“Last night, while you all were raising a ruckus, she came out of her bedroom busting balls after she got woke up. She was pretty pissed, too.”

“Oh, shit. That’s not good. She’ll tan my hide when I see her again. She’s the girls’ best friend. Name’s Lacey Connelley. Me and the three girls went to school here together. Her daddy owns that big stud farm on the other side of the creek, backing up to your property. Haven’t you met them yet?”

Jordon felt sick to his stomach.Great, now I’ve gone and pissed off my neighbor and I didn’t even do anything.

Chapter Three

After a few hours of fence work, Lacey followed her daddy into the kitchen through the back door where her mom was laying breakfast on the table. Seems whenever her mom woke her up the night before with a pointless phone call, she always made up for it the next morning with Lacey’s favorite—cream cheese and blueberry-stuffed waffles with homemade maple syrup and fresh pork sausage patties.

By the time Lacey got her waffles doctored with butter and syrup, her daddy already had two full pieces polished off and was carrying his plate to the sink.

“I got to run into the Rock Creek Feed and pick up my order.” He was grabbing his grubby Farmall hat off the peg by the door, waiting for his wife to grab her purse.

“Lacey, can you clean up after you’re done and take care of the dishes for me?”

“Sure, mom.” Confusion wracked her features. “Wait, Dad. Don’t they deliver from the feed store?” What in the world was up with them? They both acted like giddy school kids who couldn’t wait to get out the door.

“Darnell called this morning, said they had no one to drive today so I volunteered.” The screen door slammed after they both went out. Then he came right back in. “Oh, and Haylen’s oughta be calling sometime this morning about those tests on the newest tenant we got.” The screen door slammed one more time.

Her parents were acting weird. Guess she’d be enjoying her breakfast in peace.

Not more than a couple minutes later, Lacey heard a vehicle pull up just outside the house. “Good lord, what the heck are they doing back already? What did you forget now?” Lacey hollered as she pushed back from the table and headed toward the door, then heard a knock.

“Coming.” She hurried as she realized it wasn’t her mom or dad. She should have known. It was probably the vet delivering the test results in person. When she got to the door with a ready welcome, she froze dead in her tracks. The greeting she’d prepared for the vet she’d known since she was a toddler was lost on the man standing on their front porch. Had he been that handsome at their first meeting?

“What are you doing here?”

* * *

Shit.He knew it hadn’t been the best idea he’d ever had to visit his neighbors and introduce himself. But in his planning, he sure never expected her to be the one answering the door.

“So, you remember me then?” Great, she wasn’t any more pleasant in the light of day but she sure was just as beautiful. Of course, this time her ass was covered in a tight pair of jeans and her tank top definitely defined the rest of her curves he hadn’t noticed the previous night.

“Yeah, you could say that. Is there something you wanted Mr.…?”

Whew, wasn’t that a loaded question. After seeing a good portion of her um…essentials he could think of several things—but that probably wasn’t what she was referring to. Since she hadn’t yet, he probably wasn’t going to get an invite inside for coffee, either.

“Mr. Cross, but you can call me Jordon. I’d actually stopped by to introduce myself to my new neighbors. I hadn’t quite expected to see you but since you’re here, I need to apologize for last night. I had no idea there was anyone else there to wake up. I really didn’t even know your roommates.” She had the most intense pale green eyes he’d ever seen. The dark grey ring around the outside made them menacing in the right light.

“Then why were you partying with them?”
