Officer Cutler shrugged. “Take all the time you need! We better find you a place to stay. It’s a bit late at night to find a spare room; I could ring my wife and ask if you can sleep in our guest bedroom...”

“That won’t be necessary,” Wayne said.

Alex scoffed again. His smile waned.

“I have a spare room for her,” Wayne said. “That is, if you don’t mind that, Elise.”

Elise could have kissed him.

“Thank you for your hospitality, Officer, but I think I’d better go with Wayne,” Elise said.

The moment she agreed to it, she dropped her eyes to the ground anxiously. Alex chuckled menacingly.

“That settles it, then. I’ll see you tomorrow morning, Elise. And again. So terribly sorry for what happened tonight. I guess accidents happen. I always wish they didn’t have to, but in this line of business, I’m wishing that a lot,” Officer Cutler said.

Elise thanked him again. Everyone watched as Officer Cutler ambled away to speak to the head of the fire department. Wayne scratched his eyebrow and marched away from them for a moment, lost in thought.

This left Alex a perfect opportunity to step forward, lean down, and whisper:

“If you really think you want to get involved with that guy, on top of everything else? You’re in for a world of hurt.”

“I think I can make my own opinions, Alex,” Elise muttered back.

“Ah! She speaks,” Alex said.

“If you get off on threatening me and potentially framing me for arson, then this isn’t the last you’ll hear from me,” Elise said.

Throughout, she made sure to wear her sugary-sweet smile—the one she’d used when Penny had joined girl scouts and they’d had to sell cookies door to door in Calabasas.

It was the kind of smile that made Alex drain his.

It was a smile that told Alex she wouldn’t be taken down by intimidation.
