I looked at Barrett. “I haven’t made you choose between us yet, but I will one day and that day is getting closer and closer.”

“Pish posh Gagey Poo.” Enzo continued.

“Barrett.” I warned.

“Enzo, leave Gage alone. He had a rough day.” Barrett commanded.

I saw Enzo stick his tongue out before running ahead again.

“It sounds like it’s coming from our house.” Calix observed.

“You’re just hoping to catch whatever it is so we can cook it up and eat it.” Enzo teased.

“Gross.” Calix said.

“Well, we’ll be there soon.” Dresden said, walking up.

“Where have you been?” Barrett asked, looking over his shoulder.

“I found some nice wood back there. Thought I would bring it home and see what I can make out of it this weekend.”

“Do you ever rest?” I asked.

“Wood working is restful to me. It allows me to get my thoughts out.”

“Whatever.”

“Is that a horse?” Enzo asked.

“No.” Barrett said, dismissing him, then paused. “Wait… I think that is. Why is a horse wondering around this area?”

Of course, Jace walked over to it and put his hand on his neck. “Here boy.”

“What if it’s a girl?” I remarked without emotion.

Enzo bent down. “Definitely not a girl. His schlong is almost as big as Gagey Poo’s.”

I didn’t dignify his comment with an answer.

“Let’s get back to the house. We need to shower and eat and if it’s still out tomorrow, we will figure out what to do with it.” Barrett advised.

The house was just as we left it, with the flickering fire casting shadows in the living room, but something felt different even though I couldn’t put my finger on it.

We all took our shoes off and sat them in the grassy bed by the front door, stacking them neatly in a row.

Calix walked over to check the stew and gave it a light stir, bringing the spoon to his mouth to taste. He let out a moan of satisfaction. “Oh boys. We’re eating good tonight.”

“Let’s jump in the showers and clean this dirt off us before we eat.” Barrett suggested.

“Fine, but I get the middle one tonight!” Enzo bounded up the stairs.

“You know that’s mine, Enzo.” I reminded.

“Not if I get to it first.”

“I will kick your ass tonight, Enzo. I’m not in the mood for your games.”

“You can kick it in the middle shower.”
