She was gone last time, and we brought her back.

I brought her back.

“She’s not breathing and her skin is cold and her face is blue.”

“No. We can fix her.”

Barrett grabbed my arm. “Jace.”

I shook my head. “No. We are going to fix her. We shouldn’t have left her alone.” I could feel the ache deep in my bones. I hadn’t gotten to tell her… tell her how I feel about her… how we all feel about her. She was like a beacon of light that walked through our front door and lit our entire world on fire. She was our Snow. Not just Enzo’s, or mine, or Calix’s, or anyone else’s, for that matter. She was our Snow.

“She wasn’t alone.” Barrett reminded.

“Where’s Garrison?” Dresden asked.

Enzo looked up and answered. “Inside. Gage has him.”

“Is he ok?” Dresden asked.

“He says it was the Queen, dressed as a young child. He saw the way she looked at him and before he could do anything, she shot a bolt of light at him, knocking him unconscious.” He added. “He did say he heard Snow scream before he lost consciousness.”

“Fucking hell.” Calix yelled.

I pressed my ear to Snow’s nose and there wasn’t a single breath.

I pressed my fingers to her throat.

Nothing.

Not a single pulse.

Her skin was cold, and she had a bluish tinge.

I looked up at Barrett and shook my head.

“No.” Enzo said, rocking back and forth.

I had never seen him cry before and here he was in his most vulnerable state, a state he never let anyone see… We all knew and accepted that his constant jovial state was his defense mechanism- the guards he put in place to not feel pain, or connection. But again, Snow transcended those barriers and had weaseled her way in. Enzo could say that she was just for fun and didn’t mean anything to him, but it was plain to see that wasn’t true. Again, it was him putting on a front.

Gage stepped through the door and looked at all of us, his face as hard as stone.

“Gage.” I breathed.

“No.”

His face never broke, but I felt the air shift around him. Around me.

He walked down the stairs and scooped Snow up and carried her inside and laid her on the couch.

“I’m going to kill her. I’m going to kill the dark Queen.” His eyes flashed black, dark as night, a contrast to his typical icy blue, and then they snapped back.

“Gage.” Enzo warned.

“Shut your fucking mouth right now.” He held his finger up.

Barrett stepped in. “We’re all hurting… mourning, but we need to remember we are family.”

“He’s not.” Enzo said, pointing at Garrison. “We left him here with Snow to protect her and look what happened.”
