I looked at Calix, shocked, who just shrugged.

“I need to learn how to do magic. I need to work with her witches. I have to be able to defend myself.”

Enzo placed his hand on hers. “Ok. We’ll go to Ruby’s.”

“Maybe tomorrow?” I suggested. “You did just come back to life… for the second time…”

She chuckled. “Fine. Tomorrow then.”

“I’m going to find Gage.” Garrison said, walking outside.

Chapter thirty-two

Merla - Better Do Some Magic

Iwasenjoyingmyglass of brandy and finishing up my meal when the King walked in.

Why hadn’t I killed him yet? I wondered impatiently.

I knew why. I needed his power.

If he was dead, it would wreak havoc for me.

“Good evening, darling.” He waved.

I rolled my eyes.

He was a mindless drone I had programmed to be obedient and obtuse, which made me wonder what happened the night Snow escaped. How was he able to break out of the trance long enough to warn her?

Unless he was faking? No… there was no way he was that good of an actor.

I studied him as he bumbled over to the chair at the end of the table and called the servant to bring his dinner.

“My King.” I sang out in the most cheerful tone I could manage.

He looked at me and smiled.

A test, perhaps?

I sauntered over to stand beside him, placing my hand on his shoulder. “I have some distressing news, I’m afraid.”

He looked up. His eyes were misty swirls of gray. “What is it, my Queen? You can tell me anything.” He gently laid his hand over mind.

“It’s Snow. I believe I may have found her.”

His face pulled, but he didn’t say anything.

“Are we still in agreement that she must be executed?”

He studied my face. “Is that what we agreed to?” He asked, cocking his head, legitimate confusion twisting his face. He rubbed his head. “I can’t remember…”

“We did.” I nodded. “She attacked you and tried to kill me before running away.”

He sighed. “If that is what we agreed to, then it must be done. What kind of King would I be if I allowed special privileges to my family?”

I studied his face, but he gave nothing away. “And you’re ok with this?”

“I will not lie. It does trouble me some, but again. She has to be punished for her crimes against the King and Queen. If it had been anyone else, it wouldn’t even be a question and therefore should not be a question with her.”
