“Oh? Do you go over there frequently?”

“Not in a while.” She started walking again.“I was dating Barrett a while back.”

“Oh, really?” I was shocked because I got the feeling he didn’t really date… or have much fun in general.

“Yea. He’s nice, just a little too…”

“Serious?”

“Yes.” She laughed.

We got to the second platform and passed door after door.

“Are these all rooms?”

“Yea. Three levels.”

“That’s a lot of people.”

She chuckled. “Ruby’s is the most popular established in all the seven kingdoms.” She stopped outside a blank wall. “This is me.”

“A wall?”

“Scarlet.” She lightly scolded. “We’re witches. Nothing is ever like it seems.” She pressed her hand against the wall. “Revelare.” Gold flashes of light shot out from under her palm, revealing a door. She turned the handle and opened, inviting me in. “Your first lesson.” She smiled.

I stood just at the other side of the entrance, looking into the pitch dark.

“Lights. Right. Illuminaire.”

Lights flickered on across the entire room, revealing a gigantic space.

“This is all yours.”

She laughed again. “It was a test. Again, the art of illusion.” She snapped her fingers, and the room shrunk to a normal size room.

“Do you use magic for everything?”

“Most everything. It makes it super easy.”

I exhaled. “What are you going to teach me today?”

She studied me for a minute. “I’m still trying to figure out where I know you from. You look familiar.”

“I doubt that.”

She let it go for now, but I could tell it was still bothering her. “I want to get a feel for your power. See how strong you are. That will indicate how much I can teach you and what you can handle.”

“Ok. How do we do that?”

She sat on her bed and then patted the space beside her.

I hesitantly walked over.

“I’m not going to bite unless you ask me to.” She winked.

I let out a nervous laugh.

“Sit.” She turned her body to face me and tucked her right leg under her left. “Let me see your hands.”
