Gage was turning and running out of the room. I looked behind him at the dark Queen, who raised her arm and I quickly wriggled mine free. I heard her mumble the words and quickly threw my wrist out with as much force as I could, redirecting the curse back to her.

I saw the light shooting out of her hand and then shoot back towards her, striking her in the chest. She fell into a heap of cloth on the ground.

As I continued to bounce up in down in Gage’s arms, I waited for her to move but she didn’t.

Did I kill her?

Did she kill herself?

Gage pushed through the main doors with such force he nearly knocked them off the hinges.

“Hold on tight.” He commanded.

“What?” I asked, confused, still trying to wrap my head around everything that had just happened.

Before he could answer, he slung me on his back and was shifting into his wolf under me. “Oh.” I didn’t know what to grab onto, so I just grabbed fistfuls of hair and squeezed with my thighs as we raced across the field.

This was the second time I had run away from the castle, although, now, I felt like a weight had been lifted off me. I was no longer running away from something, but running towards something.

I was going home.

I looked back at the castle, waiting for the Queen to step out, but instead found another woman with long brown hair in a silver gown. She was rubbing her head, looking confused.

She looked up at me, catching my eye, and I nearly fell off Gage. It felt like someone had punched me in the stomach.

It was her.

The woman from my dreams.

I recognized her from the pictures I had seen growing up.

“Mama?” I could barely get the words out.

She’s been alive all this time?
