“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“I know what you’re going to say.”

“You do?”

“Yea. I saw you and Gideon with your heads together most of the day.”

“How observant.”

“I know you think I don’t pay attention, but I do.” He said solemnly.

I nodded.

“Ok. Let me have it.”

“We’re going to have to ask Scarlet to leave?”

“Wait, what?!”

“Wait. Huh? What did you think I was going to say?”

“I wasn’t pulling my weight today. I know I was slacking a little, but that’s because-”

“Because you were thinking about her?”

“No.”

“You weren’t?”

He didn’t say anything.

“That’s why she has to go. She’s only been at the house for a day and already you’re off daydreaming and Gage is on edge way more than usual. Imagine if-” I stopped, not sure I wanted to have this conversation with him.

“What?”

“What if she stays and then becomes involved with one of the guys? How are you going to feel then?”

“I.”

“It will cause tension and drama at the house and we don’t need that.”

“I’d be fine with it.”

“You would? So the fact I saw her and Jace kissing last night when he took her to bed?”

“He WHAT?” He yelled. I saw him searching out Jace with a look of hatred on his face.

“That’s my point right there. Look at you right now. And no. They didn’t kiss, but this… this is what we don’t need.”

“I’m sorry. I may have overreacted, but that won’t happen again.”

I laughed. “It’s cute, you think that.”

He said nothing for a moment. “She’s pretty, Barrett. Like really pretty. Probably the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen, and she doesn’t know any better. She’s been locked in a closet her entire life and then her stepmother tried to murder her.”

“That’s another thing that concerns me. We don’t know anything about her. What if she’s lying?”

“About being in a closet and trying to be killed? Why would she lie about that?”
