Snow - A Warning and a Quest

Ilaidinmybed, staring through the window at the moon. The house was quiet since most of the boys had gone to bed some time ago. Enzo, Calix and Gage still weren’t back and part of me wondered what was taking them so long.

I thought about Gage’s offer to go to the tavern and part of me wanted to show up and prove a point, even though I knew it was a snide, off-handed comment. The part he added about the tavern teaching me something was a jab no doubt at the scene he saw in the shower.

I walked downstairs and grabbed a glass of water and a blanket and sat outside, enjoying the cooler weather. Winter was always my favorite time of year, something about how everything seemed quiet and at peace filled me with comfort.

I wasn’t outside longer than an owl’s hoot when I saw three figures walking through the woods. I tensed at first, then recognized the wide shadow of Gage, walking behind two figures, one of which seemed to be limping.

“Scarlet…” Enzo mumbled when he got to the porch, like I had caught him doing something he shouldn’t have.

“Hey boys.”

“What are you doing out here?”

“I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d sit out here for a little.” I looked at Calix. “Are you ok? You’re walking a little funny.” I chuckled.

“He got rode by a werewolf.” Enzo said, patting him on the back.

I nearly choked. “A what?”

“A werewolf. Tell me you have heard of those.” Enzo bent over, pleading.

I laughed. “Yes. I have. It was just unexpected.”

I noticed Gage’s gaze on me before he spoke, almost like he was trying to figure something out. “What did you think the Red Tavern was?” Gage asked, leveling his eyes at mine. I could tell he was trying to rile me up.

“I don’t know.”

“Seems like there’s a lot you don’t know.”

“On that note, I’m going to bed.” Calix said, hobbling up the stairs.

“Let me help you.” Enzo offered, eager to get out of this conversation.

Gage didn’t move and neither did I. Part of me wanted to show him he didn’t intimidate me while the other part just wanted to be in his presence. My body felt alive when I was around him and I couldn’t figure out why. Was it because I had never experienced someone like him before?

“Did you get ridden by a werewolf?” I asked him jokingly.

He laughed. “Why does it matter to you?”

“It doesn’t. You’re still out here, so I can only take that to mean you want to tell me about your sexual exploits. Perhaps try to rile me up or get under my skin.”

“Do you want to know?”

“I don’t care.”

“I was with the Gemini sisters.”

I nodded. “Two?” I felt a pang of jealousy, but I wasn’t going to let him see.

“Yes, and it was magical.”

“Sounds fantastic. Hopefully, you won’t be such a dick now.” I said flatly.

He chuckled. “I doubt that. You still seem to bring out that side of me.”

“I do?” I moved forward and saw him tense and noticed his breathing changed. The pleasure I felt from knowing how I affected him was a rush, so I took another step forward so we were nearly chest to chest. I looked in his eyes and with the moonlight casting down on him, it was as if they almost glowed in the dark.
