She pulled her face. “Best I can do is one. We have a lot of people in town searching for that missing girl.”

I rolled my eyes, not caring anything about who was missing, but felt Snow tense beside me. “I guess we’ll take it then.” I looked at Snow and saw her watching everyone move around like it was her first time seeing this many people, and then I realized it probably was the first time.

The clerk handed me a key with a large tag reading 269 in chipped gold paint. I nodded as she pointed to the set of stairs in the middle of the room. It was kind of hard to miss the giant staircase, but whatever.

We walked into the room and found one bed with a small bathroom to its left and a little window on the opposite wall.

Snow ran over to the window and looked down. “I wonder who’s missing.”

“I don’t care.” I said simply.

“Why are you in a bad mood again?” She looked at me over her shoulder before walking to the bed and bouncing up and down on it.

“I’m not.”

“You are. I thought we had moved past this.”

“Because of what happened in the water?”

She looked at me but didn’t speak.

Why didn’t she understand? She keeps looking at me as if I am a good man and I’m not.

“We need to talk.”

She sighed.

“Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”

“What truth is that?”

I noticed her demeanor was fluctuating between defiant and distraught.

“You are Snow. Snow White. Princess Snow fucking White.”

She stood up and walked to the window again.

“Yes. I am.”

“Fucking hell.” I ran my hands through my hair. “What… why…” I didn’t know what I wanted to ask.

“I didn’t say anything because I thought if you all knew, you wouldn’t let me stay with you.”

“Hell no, we wouldn’t have. We don’t need that kind of attention!”

“I…” I saw her eyes flash and before I could do or say anything, she was crying.

Shit.

“I’m sorry. I… I… She wanted to kill me.”

“The Queen?”

“She…”

She continued sobbing into her hands. I had to fight the urge to console her because I needed to draw that line between us. I couldn’t get attached because it wouldn’t work out for us, especially now that I knew the truth, and I couldn’t hurt her.

“What?”
