I panicked. He couldn’t take on a wolf that large by himself. Its stomach was nearly four feet off the ground. Panic tore through me. Was this the beast in the woods the people in the town were talking about?

I wanted to yell at Gage, but all that would do was distract him.

I watched the wolf close in, faster and faster.

It leapt in the air at the last possible second, lunging after Gage, who ducked and rolled under it. “I’m not going to fight you.”

Why was he talking to the wolf?

The wolf skidded to a stop, facing me with Gage in the middle of us.

The wolf looked from Gage to me.

Gage looked over his shoulder.

“Damn it Snow.”

The wolf started charging, but not at Gage. At me.

I went to raise my bow, but my fingers slipped on the arrow, causing it to tumble on the ground. I quickly bent over to pick it up as fast as I could, but I was so nervous I couldn’t concentrate. When I peeked up, I saw it was closing in fast, with Gage running behind it.

“Snow. Get down!”

I grabbed my bow and was standing back up just as the wolf was several feet out, and that’s when I heard it. The shredding of clothes, followed by one of the loudest and most ferocious growls I’d ever heard.

Skidding to a stop was a large black wolf.

Gage was a werewolf.

Chapter eighteen

Gage - Rehashing the Past

Shit!

I looked over my shoulder and saw Snow standing there, and he saw her too.

If you won’t fight me on your honor, maybe you’ll fight me to protect her.

Unlikely.

Let’s test out the theory, shall we?

Garrison!I warned.

Fight me.

No!

Then I will maul her to death and you can have Snow’s death on your conscious too!

I glanced at Snow and saw the panic in her eyes. She was starting to raise her bow to shoot him, and I had mixed feelings.

Did I want her to kill him?

Part of me did.

The arrow slipped.
