I wondered if it had anything to do with Gage, then realized there was no way he could know about that and surely Gage wouldn’t have said anything when he stopped by and talked to Barrett. I doubted if Gage would even acknowledge what we shared.

Which was fine. Again, I wasn’t looking for anything serious. I just wanted to live and to experience… life.

Enzo jumped on the bed. “What do you want to do today?”

“I told Calix I would go into town and pick up some grocery items so he wouldn’t have to do it tomorrow.”

He rolled his eyes and fell back onto the bed.

I patted him on the chest. “You’ll be ok.”

He grabbed my hand and pulled me down, so I landed awkwardly on top of him.

I laughed and then paused when I looked at him. Our eyes locked, and I felt the weight of the room change.

This was it.

I felt my breathing slow as we stared at one another.

His hand slowly cupped the edge of my cheek and heat was radiating off of it in pulses. I turned my hand into his wrist at the same time he brushed the hair out of my face. “Your throat is looking a lot better.”

It was like something snapped us- me- back to reality. “Yea. Jace has been putting a cream he created on it to help it heal.”

“Oh, I know what Jace has been doing.” He popped out of bed and threw on a pair of pants and a shirt.

“You seem jealous.”

He looked glanced at me over his shoulder. “Whose bed did you wake up in? I’m not jealous.” He winked and dashed out of the room, yelling as he descended the stairs.

I laughed, climbing out of bed and stretching. We had the house to ourselves and every morning he would yell and scream at the top of his lungs as he swung from raft to raft in the living room. He looked like a monkey, but it made me laugh.

When I got downstairs, he dropped to his feet in front of me.

“Do you want some breakfast?” I opened the fridge. “Looks like Calix left us some. I can heat it up.”

He stood behind me, his chest on my back as he leaned over, pressing his cheek to mine. “Looks good to me.”

I turned my head only slightly to look at him. I couldn’t tell if he was teasing me on purpose or was just that obtuse, but the continued closeness and touching was sending my body reeling.

I popped my butt out into him, making him jump back.

If this was a game, then two could play it.

He laughed and sat at the table while I heated the food.

“So I was thinking we could eat then head to town. I need to get back so I can do the laundry.”

“Sure, sounds good.” He said flatly.

I sat down at the table. “Ok then.”

I looked at him for a second, trying to figure out what had changed. He was usually never that agreeable. There was always a groan or complaint or a joke mixed in.

We finished our food and headed to town.

“Do you have any magic that can transport us there?” Enzo teased the moment we stepped outside.

“No. I was hoping my horse would be back and we could take him.” Since the dark Queen came by, my horse hadn't been around. I never tied him up, because I wanted him to explore and be free, but I was kind of missing him.
