“A mage?”

“Yes… to teach her the arts.”

She studied me for a minute.

Enzo continued. “She just learned she has powers.”

“And her parents?”

“Can’t help.”

“Can’t help?”

“It’s a long story.”

Ruby raised her brows.

It was obvious she was a woman who didn’t trust blindly and while she liked Enzo, she didn’t fully trust him.

“Ruby.” I started. “Can you keep a secret?”

She laughed. “I run this place. Of course I can.”

I took in a deep breath. I didn’t want to do this, but could quickly read the room and knew we would not get anywhere beating around the bush. Ruby didn’t strike me as that kind of lady. “I’m Snow White and on the run. The dark Queen is my mother and wants me dead. I just learned all of this, as well as the fact I have powers, and need to learn how to use them, so I can defend myself... against her.”

Ruby looked from me to Enzo back to me and then, without warning, burst into laughter. “I like her Enzo.” She continued laughing. “Snow White… in my tavern… classic.” She rested her hands on mine. “I’ll help you out Scarlet. I have a few mages I employ, but I will set up some time with Lilibet. She will probably be the best for you.”

I smiled. “Thank you, thank you!”

“You’re welcome dear.” She leaned in, so her lips were pressed against my ear. “Go by Scarlet here. I can keep your secret, but others…”

I looked her in the eyes and nodded.

I was so happy, but that quickly disappeared when I heard a voice boom behind me.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

I turned around and found a girl hanging on Gage’s arm.

Chapter twenty-four

Gage - Brotherly Bonding

Shit.

I glanced over and looked at Josie, getting dressed.

I used the word dress, loosely, since she was only wearing a sheer bra and matching panties.

I was hoping a quick visit to Ruby’s tavern before I went home would help settle me and get my mind off Snow.

But it didn’t.

The last week I had regrettably spent with my brother. It took me a day to find him and when I did, he had already found one of the Queen’s children before I could convince him to find another way.

Fortunately, he seemed to have matured, and it seemed to bother him more than it used to and more than it bothered our father. Sometimes I wondered if our father ever had a caring bone in his body. Oftentimes I felt like we were a means to an end, being used much like the Queen uses her children.

Which then led me back to Snow.
