“Help yourself to anything. Fridge is stocked. Hannah brought over some clothes and toiletries. She said you should be good for the most part. If you think of anything else, let me know. Your room is just over here.” She follows me down the hall. It takes everything in me not to say screw the deal, lure her back toward mine, and fuck her against my dresser. Then the wall, then the shower. I clear my throat as I take a right into the spare bedroom. “This should do it.” She walks up next to me, those addictive eyes gazing around the room.

“Wow, this is really nice. Didn’t expect such. . . cleanliness from a bachelor.” It wasn’t clean up until about four hours ago when I had a cleaning lady scrub the hell out of the entire place. Hannah also came over, returning from the store with my credit card and a bag full of bedding and décor. “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” I reply, full of shit. I’m never even here. I practically live at the firehouse and crash at Chase’s most days. Or used to.

“Well, thank you. This is really kind of you.”

I shrug her off. “No problem. How about we get settled in, and I order some food?” I walk out, not daring to look at my bedroom door. I stop in my living room and grab the remote. “Not sure what’s on right now, but we can watch a—”

The door handle to my apartment jiggles.

“Is someone at your door?” Makayla asks.

My eyes remain trained on my door. “Better not be,” I reply under my breath. I wait for it, then hear the faint sound of a key being inserted into my goddamn lock. Why the fuck did I agree to give—

My door opens, and Chase pops his head in. “S’up? Oh. . .” His attention bounces between Makayla and me. “Hey, kids. Whatcha doin’?”

What I’maboutto do is kick his ass. “Playing house. What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you to get home from work so you can help me with something.”

“I took the day off.”

“Well, you should have told me. I would have come over earlier.”

“I didn’t take it off for you,” I reply, annoyed.

“Who did you take it off for then?” Again, with the bouncing back and forth. “Oh. Oh! I got it.” He still doesn’t take the hint and leave. Instead, he shuts the door behind him and walks toward the couch.

“What are you two up to?”

“Nothing,” I snap.

“Cool. Ya know, this kind of feels like deja vu. Right?” He looks at me with his stupid, shit-eating grin. “Like that one timeyoucame over for movie night.” He wiggles his brows, signing his death warrant.

“What are you talking about?” Makayla jumps in, and I almost punch him in the nose so he can’t answer.

“It’s nothing. He’s just—”

“Coming to hang out,” fucker says, cutting me off. “Now that I think about it, I know the perfect thing to do. You two weren’t going to watch anything specific, were you?”

“Chase. . .” I threaten.

“Sweet. Makayla, get comfy. Today’s your lucky day.” Chase throws himself onto my couch and grabs the remote. Steam pours from my ears. Makayla bites her bottom lip, holding in a damn smirk as she sits next to Chase.

“What do you have in mind?” she asks.

He looks her way and smiles, showing his ugly ass white teeth. “How about a little rivalry rematch?” His eyes shoot up to me. He waggles his brows, points the remote to the TV, and turns on the game.

Motherfucker.

“Dude, she just got out of the hospital. I don’t think she wants to—”

“Oh, no, I do,” she cuts me off, her damn smile as wide as Chase’s. She turns to face him after watching the screen. “How bad do you think my team’s gonna shell them? Already second inning and we’re up by three.”

I stare at the TV. “It’s only the top which means shit. Plus, you have hometown advantage.”

“Is someone back there making excuses?” she pokes.

Chase joins in. “Never a good sign having to make up shit for a losing team. I say they choke by at least six runs—”
