I was not a morning person.

But the promise of coffee drove me to the kitchen.

There I found Ben sitting on a barstool as he scrolled through his phone with one hand and drank coffee with the other. “Coffee,” I croaked, heading straight to my coffee maker. Once I prepped my cup, with lots of cream and lots of sugar, I sat down on the only other barstool.

Putting down his phone, Ben gave a languid glance down the length of my body. I held out my hand, “Stop. No seducing me right now. Must have coffee.”

He laughed that deep laugh of his. “You know most women I sleep with enjoy a little morning delight.”

I looked at him from above the rim of my mug. “Well, I’m not most women.” I pursed my lips together and raised my brows.

“Nobody who has met you would ever accuse you of that,” he agreed.

That's when I noticed Ben shifting around in his seat, looking slightly uncomfortable. I frowned. If he didn't want to do the whole morning after song and dance, he could have left.

Although, I hated to admit that it was kind of nice finding him in my kitchen. Until now, he seemed so relaxed in my space. Like he fit right into it.

A sense of comfort washed over me. Something I hadn't felt in a long time.

Possibly never. But that would be ridiculous because we barely knew each other.

Ben cleared his throat, dragging me back to the present. “Listen,” he moved his hand behind his neck. “You need to be my fake girlfriend tonight. I have a work event and I know Bethany will be there.” He wasn't so much asking as he was telling me. Normally, that would rub me the wrong way, but I kinda liked that he got all domineering with me.

“You want me to go out with you. Take this charade on the road?” I pointed a finger at him then at me. “Like a date.”

He nodded. “You are the one that came up with the fake girlfriend plan in the first place. Now I need you to continue to act so that Bethany doesn't try to corner me tonight. If I took someone else, then she'd know I'd been lying to her and she'd be even more aggressive.”

That I didn't doubt.

I didn't have a shift tonight, so technically I could go…

“What’s in it for me?” I used the same line as the other day.

He lifted and dropped a shoulder. “Easy. I'll owe you a few orgasms. Then we can go our separate ways.”

That’s right. We both said we didn’t want anything more. Insisted on it really.

Suddenly that seemed like the most idiotic thing to agree to. Just like not letting him fuck me fully that first night.

“Fine. I’ll go with you, but I have a few conditions.”

Ben folded his hands in front of him. “Okay, let’s hear them.”

I lifted a finger to begin my list. “One, you will owe me a night of orgasms on a day of my choosing. Think of it as an ‘in case of an emergency’ card, except I'll cash this in when I need a good pounding.” I liked the idea that I could cash in that favor when I was feeling like Fabio wasn't going to cut it. “And two,” I paused, “once this event is over, we need to stop seeing each other. I can't keep bailing you out.” The second rule protected me and my pesky heart from catching any more feelings.

Having Ben here was beginning to be a little too comfortable for my liking.

I didn’t need to be burned again.

Ben's hand found my thigh. “Trying to get rid of me, neighbor?” I dropped my gaze to watch him massage me. My eyes fluttered, it felt so good.

No. I needed to make him stop.

Reluctantly, I removed his hand from my leg, getting out of the chair to put some distance between us.

He checked his watch and swore. “I need to get ready for work.” Ben pushed away from the counter, washed his coffee mug and then came up to me, trapping me between himself and the counter. “I'll pick you up at 7 pm. Cocktail attire.”

Then, as if in slow motion, he lowered his lips to mine. What started as a sweet goodbye kiss quickly escalated into something so much more. His kiss was demanding, all-consuming as his tongue slid into my mouth and claimed me.
