The words were not spoken aloud, but in her new silent speech, resonating like cicadas singing to the sunset. Love reverberated between them, a joy made that much stronger when shared.

Delight burst from him, a starburst, a shaft of sunlight split into dozens of rainbows. Strong arms wrapped around her and he breathed into her ear, “I could get used to this whole anchor thing.”

“I already am,” she whispered back, nudging him with her hip.

He gave a soft groan, then kissed and nibbled at her neck, sending shivers of pleasure across her entire body. “Verve,” he said between kisses, “I love you, too.”

The words thrilled through her. She would never tire of hearing them. So she turned so they were face to face, the warm hearth glowing at her back, and ran her hand down his torso. He closed his eyes at her touch and his desire flared to a roaring flame, then he gripped her waist and pulled her closer, sealing the gap between them with a searing kiss.

Alem’s agile fingers danced down her spine to her ass, gripping her cheeks as he deepened the kiss. His touch was strong, certain, but gentle all the same. But Verve didn’t want gentle, at least not right now. She drove her hips against his hard length, where the thin fabric of his pants and her small-clothes sent delicious friction through every nerve. His breath came shorter.

“Verve…”

“Yes, Alem?” she whispered, as innocently as she could while they were both nearly naked and rubbing all over each other.

Alem’s lids fluttered as he gazed at her. “Will you stay here?”

She stared at him, her mind blank with desire. “In Lotis?”

“Yes.” He paused. “With me.”

No one had ever wanted her to stick around. Before her conversation with Sohvi, she had given little thought to her life beyond the next few months. But she could stay long enough to make a home. She could do whatever she wanted. Her life was her own.

But of course she couldn’t just answer him, so she slid her fingers down over his pants, caressing his hardness. He shut his eyes and sucked in a breath; she could feel his heart racing beneath his chest.

“Whatever would I do out here in the middle of nowhere?” she murmured as she stroked him.

He groaned. “You’re… resourceful.”

“True.” She tugged down the fabric, freeing him completely, and skimmed her thumb over his tip, already wet with desire. “What would you do if I stayed?”

His dark eyes snapped open and fixed on her intently. “Love you until my last breath, and then into my next life, and on and on. Forever.”

Love overlaid his words: a shining thread that bound their hearts. Verve, struck mute with joy and a strange surprise, could at first only stare at him. At last, she managed, “I suppose that will do.”

Alem grinned at her and slid his own palm beneath her small-clothes, pushing down the fabric. His skilled, strong fingers found her soaking center and toyed with her, making her gasp, sending chills of pleasure across her completely. They faced one another as they pleasured each other, until Verve couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Alem,” she moaned into his ear. “Please.”

His index finger circled her pearl, deviously, deliciously slowly. “Please, what?”

Utterly at his mercy, she gave a soft whimper. “I need you inside me. Now.”

“Oh.” His lips pressed so gently to her forehead even as he worked her into a frenzy with his hand. “Well, I suppose that will do.”

“Ass,” she hissed, but the word came out as more of a laugh.

“Mmmm. Maybe next time.” He sat up and pulled her legs apart, and angled his body over hers. Slowly, so slowly she wanted to scream in frustrated joy, he slid inside her. An exquisite feeling of fullness shattered the very last of her control, and she cried his name, gripped his waist to pull him closer.

Their bodies moved in tandem, perfectly attuned to each other’s pleasure. Verve’s body wound itself tighter and tighter around him, her bliss stoked to a blaze as much by her own pleasure as his. Alem drove into her with strong, measured strokes at first, before his pace quickened and he stared at her with fire in his eyes. Verve met his gaze and together, they found their release, gazes and spirits as connected as their physical forms.

After, Alem held her close, but his touch was not confining. In his arms, she was someone precious, someone worthy of love, but she was still Verve. Even as their spirits merged, they remained themselves. And she could think of no better place to start the rest of her life.
