Kyon added, “And I damn sure don’t want to work for Legion like the rest of my clan.”

Ivet tensed and looked up at Alem, who nodded once, the motion so small, Verve easily could have mistaken it for a trick of her eyes.

Ivet bowed a greeting to the two newcomers. “Do not fear the mage called Marea Damaris. They know friend from foe. If peace dwells in your hearts, you will be welcome in Lotis.”

Alem glanced over at Verve. “Put that away, if you please. We don’t need it any longer.”

Verve eased off of the trigger, but didn’t unload the bolt. “What will Damaris say when they meet these two?”

He rolled his eyes. “None of your business. Watch our backs, will you?” With that, he slipped ahead and began questioning the two new mages as the group made their way to Lotis.

Verve slowly followed, keeping her eyes on the thick forest, and the darkening stormy sky. The whole way back, Kyon and Nori alternated glancing back to watch her every move. Verve didn’t blame either for their caution.
