FIANNA: And you’ll probably screw that woman tonight

It took him two minutes to respond. The dots that signaled he was typing agonized her. But the truth hurt more. Like a bitch.

RONAN: Only because she reminds me of you

A tear pricked the corner of her eye. She couldn’t believe his nerve.

FIANNA: I hate you

RONAN: And you fuckin’ broke me, Fi

Not Red. Not even a mocking Princess. But Fi.

She handed the fare to the driver. A few minutes later, she settled into her couch in her one-bedroom apartment. She glanced at her phone, typed a response but deleted it. What was there to say?

They had broken each other.

After a scalding shower, she put her pajamas on and crawled into bed. Done with this day, she hit the light next to her. She grabbed her phone and squinted when the screen illuminated the bedroom.

Her group chat with Mae and Emmy had several new messages.

MAE: Are you home safe?

EMMY: Let us know…

MAE: We’re at the farm. If you don’t call me in the next minute, we’re waking up Mom.

Fianna rubbed a stray tear from her cheek. Shauni Mills-Moore was the best mother one could ever ask for. She may not be Fianna’s mother but she sure felt like it. The Moore family had always been her family away from home. She felt bad about ditching Mae and Emmy at the Velvet Club.

FIANNA: I’m home. I’m sorry I ran out on you.

FIANNA: Ro was there.

She didn’t need to tell her friends anything else. They knew the score.

MAE: I know. We saw him and Aiden.

EMMY: He told us he saw you taking a cab. He asked us to let him know if we heard from you.

Fianna typed; ‘Why should he care? He’s with some chick.’ but she deleted her text. Ronan could hang out with all the women he wanted. He’s a single guy, and she had no claim on him.

They chatted for half an hour in their group text and Fianna promised to never walk out on her friends again.

She closed her apps and rolled on her side. The night flashed before her eyes. First Todd, then Carlos and to top it all off; Ronan.

“What a joke…” She whispered to herself in the dark.

A ping of another text came in.

She stretched for her phone on the dresser.

RONAN: Nothing happened tonight

RONAN: I know I’m a bastard

RONAN: But I’m your bastard

RONAN: Always have been and always will be
