At least he knows to be afraid of the Knights I guess.
I climb from the front of the car, opening the door for Diego and pulling him out. “If you betray us…”
“I won’t,” he squeaks, but I don’t trust him. He’s a fucking coward, and they always take the easy way out. Even if it means betraying the people closest to them.
And he doesn’t give two fucks about us.
Lincoln walks toward the house and I push Diego to walk behind him while Mav takes my six. A very pissed off Ryker swings the front door open before we’re even halfway up the walk.
“I fucking knew you had him.”
“We didn’t,” Lincoln states, squaring off with him. “But we found him, and we’re returning him.”
They stare each other down, neither one of them willing to back down.
“He’s telling the truth,” Diego says quietly, and I can’t help but wonder how this guy created the Kings. He’s a fucking pussy. It’s working in our favor for now, but fuck knows how long that will last. It might’ve been better for Ryker if his brother had stayed away.
Ryker glares at his brother, not exactly the warm welcome I was expecting, but steps back to let us in. I follow Diego in and head down to the basement where Ellis, Dylan, and Indi are all sitting playing Xbox.
Indi’s head whips around first, and her gasp draws the attention of the others.
“What’s wrong?” she asks, her brow furrowed as she stands, her gaze bouncing between us all.
“They brought Diego back,” Ryker says, pushing past me. “Nothing’s wrong.”
“Yes it is,” she stresses. “Look at them. What is wrong?”
I’ll be fucked if I know how she knows. Especially since reading any of us is usually impossible, but I guess she’s hung around with V long enough to work some shit out.
“V was taken. East is in the hospital,” Linc confirms, and her eyes go wide. He shifts his focus over to Ryker, and I can practically see how hard it is to say the next words that come out of his mouth. “We need your help.”
Ryker smirks, letting out a sharp laugh before Indi elbows him in the stomach and he winces.
“What do you need?” she asks, and I am thankful once again that V found a friend like her. Fuck knows she deserves one.
“The guy who took her left in a black, plateless SUV. He put the surveillance on loop, so there’s no trace of him,” I start so Lincoln doesn’t have to. He’s having a shit enough day as it is. “We know you guys have people on every goddamn corner of the Cove, we just need to know if anyone saw the SUV so we can work out where she is.”
“You mean it wasn’t the Knights?” Ellis asks, scratching the back of his neck. “I thought that’s who wanted her?”
“It is, and it’s a long story. But it’s not the Knights. Not as a whole, anyway.”
“The stalker?” Dylan asks, and I nod.
“Yeah, except we think he is a Knight—he’s just working unsanctioned.”
“Well isn’t this just a right fucking shit storm you boys have walked into,” Ryker says with a smirk while Diego disappears into a different room. “I suppose since you brought Diego back, we can help.”
“We will help because it’s my best fucking friend,” Indi snaps at him. The smile drops from his face and he nods.
“We’ll help however we can.” He looks at Dylan, who nods and takes his phone from his pocket, dialing as he leaves the room, motioning for Maverick to join him. “Why don’t you tell us everything you’ve got so far and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do to help you guys out?”
Lincoln looks like he chewed a fucking wasp’s nest, but this was a good idea. Whether he likes it or not. He knows it too, otherwise we wouldn’t be here.
We sit with the three of them and lay out almost everything, leaving out some of the finer Knight-related details that aren’t vital; Indi looks like she’s going to have a freaking heart attack. “Why didn’t she tell me it was this bad?”
“She probably didn’t want to scare you,” Ellis says softly, hugging her.
“That or she thought you guys would sort it before it got out of hand,” Ryker snarls, and Lincoln clenches his fists so hard I wonder if I’m going to have to restrain him before we’re done here.
