OCTAVIA

Sliding into my dad’s Range Rover, I hook up my phone and let out a deep breath. The first day back to school after break always sucks, but knowing that my guys are going to be MIA today as a result of whatever the fuck happened with Harrison after he dismissed me yesterday makes it suck even harder.

But, for a change, I’m picking my girl up for coffee and breakfast before school. After Finley inspected my car at ass o’clock this morning while Lincoln and I went on our morning run. Apparently they’re still not taking any chances. Not that I can be mad about it.

My phone buzzes as I start the engine and I smile when I see Smithy’s name.

Smithy:

Good Morning, Miss Octavia. We shall be flying home this evening, so I will likely make it back to the house sometime tomorrow. I hope you had a wonderful break. Make sure to eat breakfast, and have a good day at school.

Me:

Morning! Totally fine, take your time and enjoy yourself **heart emoji** Heading for breakfast now. See, I can adult!

Smithy:

Yes, if you say so. **raised eyebrow emoji** See you soon.

I laugh as I place my phone back on its holder, putting on my morning playlist before pulling out of the drive. The trip to Indi’s doesn’t take very long, and I drop her a message to let her know I’m outside.

She emerges from the house, practically skipping toward the car and I can’t help but grin at her. She is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum. She’s such a bad early morning person, but get her ready for the day and she has so much pep, it makes you sick.

She bounces into the car, her blue fishtail braid swinging free, and hugs me like she hasn’t seen me in four months, not four days.

“Morning!” she practically sings as she squeezes me. “How was Mexico?

“It was good. Maybe a little too… exciting at times, but good.”

“Oh no. What did those assholes do now?” She frowns as she pulls her seatbelt on, and I pull away from the curb.

“Not them. The Knights. It’s nothing, but they won’t be at school today.”

“I did wonder why I got you back for the morning. I’m not sad about it, but is everything okay?”

I shrug as I stop at the light, waiting for the green. “I have no idea. I think so. Lincoln didn’t give much away this morning—shock, horror—but I like to think if it was really bad, then he’d tell me.”

“How is he doing? Juggling the whole Georgia thing?”

“Honestly, he doesn’t say much about her. Which I guess is a good sign, but I don’t really know. He doesn’t want to upset me by talking about her, so he doesn’t say much. I know he’s ready for the charade to be over and that’s about it.”

“I don’t blame him, poor guy.” She frowns as she taps away on her screen. “But I’m glad you had a decent break, even if it did come with a little excitement. Now back to the drama of ECP. You heard anything from Blair?”

I bark out a laugh as we pull into the Starbucks drive-thru. “Never in a million years is the answer to that question going to be a yes. Why, what did you hear?”

“That your uncle is in deep shit. Like, royally fucked. Oh, look, I’m punny.” She giggles before dropping the smile and getting all stern again. “But for reals, I think it’s going to get bad. We might get another paparazzi swarm here.”

I groan as we pull up to the mic. “Just what I need. You want your usual?”

“Course.” She grins.

I order our usual drinks before pulling around to the next window, wondering how the fuck I’m going to deal with another influx of paparazzi if it happens. With everything that’s going on with the Knights, the last thing I need is people watching my every move and trying to capture it on camera. I’ve just finally gotten used to not having to hide everything I do.

What a pile of ass.

I grab our drinks and toasted sandwiches, handing them to Indi before I head toward the school. “Have they announced official charges yet?”

“Not that I’ve read. I’ve been following it online as much as I can. They’re playing it close to the vest, but I think they are going to be out a lot of money when all the details come out. There is going to be a lot of hate thrown in his direction. Blair and Vivianne might not be able to stay in the Cove if it gets too bad.”
