A challenge flashes in his eyes at my defiant tone, but he nods while the rest of the Conclave remain silent. Except for Edward, who snorts a laugh, stifling it when Harrison glares at him.
“Perfect. So as I’m sure you are all aware, Octavia Royal is back in Echoes Cove after the… untimely death of our old Regent.” I pull the folded document from my pocket and drop the copy on the table in front of me. “As I’m sure you’re all also aware, Stone put several failsafes in place for Octavia, so that she remained free of the Knights. The document on the table is the contract he made with you all.”
I push the paper across the table to Finn’s dad, who opens the envelope and nods at Harrison after he confirms what I’ve said. If looks could kill, I’d be dead and cold on the ground from the look Harrison gives me.
“That contract clearly states that in the instance of his death, Octavia is to be protected by the Knights, but that her freedom is still granted. Her freedom is for life, and the rest of Stone’s line will remain free but be granted the benefits of the Knights, unless they choose to join the Knights under their own volition without active influence from any member.” I pause for effect, letting everything sink in before continuing. “It also states that, should Octavia be approached, hurt by, or initiated into the Knights, she instantly takes the Regency.”
Murmurs go up around the room and it occurs to me that maybe not everyone was privy to the details of the deal Stone made when he stepped down. And considering the fact that my father looks like he’s going to implode, I’m guessing he wasn’t aware either.
“What is the point here, Lincoln?” Harrison asks through clenched teeth, and it takes a lot of strength not to just laugh at him.
“My point, Father,” I spit, “is that Octavia has been taken, we think, by a Knight. It means that if any harm comes to her by his hand, she will be the rightful Regent of this Sect.”
