I blush at the compliment and wave her off. “Hardly. You know I’m not exactly a fan of it. But 4.0.”

“Yeah, I know. Stupid clause. But, you’ll slay it. You always do. Now let’s go eat because it’s pasta day and I am starving.” She rubs her stomach to emphasize her hunger and I laugh. “Did you hear about your aunt and Blair?”

I shake my head. “I don’t think so. What happened now?”

“Well, rumor has it, all their assets have been frozen, and they’ve been kicked out of the house.” She loops her arm through mine and pulls me toward the cafeteria. “I also heard that Raleigh dropped her. It’s a bad day to be Blair Royal.”

“Is she even at school today?” I ask, because I haven’t seen her and that’s unusual.

“Yeah she’s here. Though, she’s wandering like a lost lamb. The bitch squad have apparently abandoned her too.”

My jaw about hits the floor. Nothing quite like loyalty in the hard times. Fucking hell.

Am I seriously feeling sorry for her?

Me and my stupid bleeding heart.

“She deserves nothing else. She’s literally shit on everyone to get ahead. It’s about time karma bit her in the ass.” My bestie sounds fierce as fuck, and I remember that Blair put her through a year of hell before I even got here. Any pity I might have had flits away. She can shit on me and I’ll take it, but do not fuck with my friends.

“No truer words have ever been said. Fuck the haters and rise above.”

She snickers. “Yeah, maybe, but I’m probably going to sit and watch her downfall with popcorn. I can be a petty bitch when I want to.”

“Can’t we all?” I laugh.

We grab our food, the chicken and spinach cream pasta has me salivating as we sit at our usual table. I finish catching her up on the craziness of the weekend and everything that happened at the Saints’ on Saturday night.

“I still can’t believe Lincoln is engaged to her. Are you okay?”

I shrug, taking a bite of my pasta. “As okay as you would be if Ryker was engaged to someone because his dad told him he had to be.”

“Fair point,” she says, looking like she’s about to pop off. “Speaking of Lincoln, where are your guys?”

“I have absolutely no idea.” I sigh, pulling my phone from my pocket. I drop a message into our group chat asking where they are but get no response.

“Weird,” she says, pursing her lips.

Cackling from the bitch squad’s table catches my attention, so I look up and see Blair enter the room, trying to ignore the people she used to call her friends as they point and laugh at her.

So much for long live the queen.

Mikayla sure looks comfy with Blair’s sycophants crooning to her.

Blair keeps her head held high as she joins the line to get food, but when she’s shunned by even the lowest on the totem pole of the school hierarchy, I see her wobble. It’s only a moment but it’s there.

She grabs her food and glances around the room, locking eyes with me just long enough for me to see the hate and rage she still has for me.

Oh, goodie.

She starts to walk our way, but someone trips her before she can reach us and she eats the floor, her tray flying upward and dumping most of her lunch on her head and back as it comes crashing down.

“You should be more careful where you walk, gutter rat,” Mikayla cackles, the room erupting in laughter. Blair pushes up to her knees, and while I feel bad for her, I can’t help but think that if it was anyone else, she’d be the one in Mikayla’s shoes.

I don’t think even going through this will change the way she is.

“Be careful sitting up there on your throne, Mikayla. Secrets only stay secrets if everyone keeps their mouth shut,” Blair snaps at her before turning and storming from the room while most people point and laugh.

“I wonder what that means,” Indi says, turning back to her food.
