I scramble to my knees, but before I can get up I feel his weight on top of me and I slip in the slick mud.
I struggle and fight against him, but he’s bigger than me.
Stronger than me.
And it’s so fucking wet.
He laughs in my ear before manhandling me until I’m on my back beneath him, looking up into his dark, soulless eyes.
“I told you I would ruin you one day.” His hands move from my wrists to my neck and he presses down on my throat, constricting all my air.
I claw at him; his face, his neck, his hands, but he just laughs and squeezes tighter, before leaning forward and licking my cheek. “Vengeance tastes so sweet.”
Fight, Briar.
Iris’s voice rings out in my head, but a part of me wonders if I have all that much worth fighting for.
Dammit, Briar. Fight!
Her voice is loud, as if she’s here with me, and just for a second, I close my eyes and picture my little sister's face.
Fight.
I feel around, searching for the rock I tripped over, anything to help me fight against him. Beneath my nails fill with mud as I scrape at the wet ground, desperate for anything that can save me.
Darkness starts to take the edges of my vision as I feel the roughness of stone and I sag a little.
You can do this, Briar.
I grip the rock as hard as I can and swing for the side of his head, but he just laughs at me and squeezes my throat tighter.
Shit. I might actually die.
So I swing the rock again and he falters. I do it again, and again, and again until he’s sagging against me and I can’t tell if the wet on my face is rain or blood.
I try to push him off me, but he’s too fucking heavy, and I’m so weak.
Instead, I reach beneath him to my pocket, and struggle for my phone, dialing the last number that called me.
It only rings once before I hear Travis’s voice and I start to sob down the phone.
“Briar! What the fuck is going on? Where are you?”
I sob again, trying to move his weight off of me, but I feel like I can’t breathe. “Travis, I think I killed him. I think he’s dead.”
