Chapter1

Gina

As soon as I see my best friend’s grinning face, I know she’s up to something. Jamie’s brown eyes are so wide I can see white all around, and her usually immaculate blonde hair is coming loose from the high ponytail she has it in. It all works together to make her look slightly unhinged. The crazy gleam in her eyes isn’t helping.

“What?” I ask, because I’d rather know upfront exactly what is going on in that brain of hers.

Her eyes light up and a devilish grin spreads across her face. I know this look, and I brace myself accordingly.

“Guess who’s going to a fight tonight?”

“What?”

“It just so happens that I found out there’s going to be a secret fight tonight at the Red Wolf, and we’re going to go watch it.”

“What?”

She laughs and flops down on my bed, grabbing a pillow in the shape of a giant pair of lips to prop her head up with. “You already said that.”

“But I don’t understand.”

“Clearly,” she says, letting out another laugh when I shoot her a frustrated look.

“It’s simple, Gina. I found out there’s going to be a fight, and I’m taking you to it.”

“But why? There’s no way they’re going to let us in!”

“Well, the why is obvious. You’ve been obsessing over Dmitri Volkov for as long as I can remember, and I think it’s time you got to see him in action, don’t you?” She gives me a wink. “They say he’s unbeatable.”

I groan and sit down on the bed next to her. It’s true I’ve been obsessing about Dmitri, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s a good idea to sneak into his club, or clubs for that matter. He owns the Arctic Fox, the hottest nightclub in town, but he also owns the Red Wolf, which is like an elite gym for dedicated boxers. Rumor has it they hold illegal fights there periodically, which apparently isn’t all rumor since we’re about to see one.

“How are we going to even get in? I mean, we’re only nineteen, and the bouncers don’t just let anyone in.” I force myself to relax and breathe. I’m already envisioning the embarrassment of being rudely and loudly turned away in front of a line of people.

Jamie gives a dramatic sigh and interlaces her hands behind her head.

“The things I do for my best friend. Let’s just say that I made myself a new friend, a very ripped, manly new friend.”

I look down, studying the smug grin she’s wearing and the wicked glint in her eyes.

“Good God, what did you do?”

She makes an exaggerated blowjob motion with her mouth and hand, and then laughs at the shocked expression on my face.

“Who did you give a blowjob to?” I practically yell.

“I’m just kidding,” she says with a laugh. “Well, I mean I did give him a blowjob, but I didn’t do it for information. Give me a little bit of credit.”

She laughs again, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear she was blushing.

Before I can ask her about it, she tosses the lip pillow at me and yells, “If you must know, his name is Aleksei. I didn’t get a last name, though. I hope that’s okay with you. Don’t judge me, Gina. Not everyone wants to live like a nun. Plus, I initially approached him for you, you ungrateful ass!”

I try my best to look angry at the nun comment, but it’s hard when she’s still laughing.

“I would never judge you, and you know it.” Feeling the need to defend myself, I add, “I don’t live like a nun, by the way. I’m just choosing to save myself for someone, that’s all.”

“Uh-huh, and I wonder who this mysterious man could be.” She lifts an eyebrow at me, waiting.

We both know it’s Dmitri, but I’m sure as hell not going to say it out loud. It feels too pathetic to even admit it in a very quiet voice inside my own head. She takes pity on me and sits up, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
