The sound of her laughter fills the car, and I can’t help but join in.

“Why? You planning on getting me something?”

“We will see. You have hard time being good.”

She laughs and is about to say something when she claps her hands excitedly at the diner she sees in front of us.

“You know this place?”

“No, but Jamie ate here not too long ago, and she couldn’t stop raving about how good their waffles are. I’ve been dying to come and check it out myself but never got the time.”

“I am glad this will be another first for you.” I grab her hand and give it a kiss. “So many firsts, Gina. You are spoiling me.”

Her eyes soften at my words and the feel of my lips on her skin. “You deserve to be spoiled,” she says.

“I hope you always look at me like this.” I reach out and run a finger down her cheek, noticing the way her breath gives a soft hitch at my touch.

“How am I looking at you?”

“Like I am most important person in the world to you, like you love me unconditionally, and like you are happy to be with me.”

“You are, I do, and I am,” she says with a big grin. “I will always look at you like this, Dima.”

She gives me another big smile and kisses my hand. “Now, please feed me a giant stack of waffles before I pass out. I’m not used to such a vigorous morning workout,” she says with a wink.

I laugh and get out of the car. She doesn’t wait for me to walk around and instead hops out of the other side and meets me at the front of the car, looping her arm through mine.

“I am not sure I consider waffles very nourishing, but you do need to eat.”

“I’ll eat something healthy later,” she says with a swat of her hand. “I’ve earned these.”

“That you have.” I give her a wink and lead her inside to my usual booth in the corner. I eat here all the time, mainly by myself, but sometimes Nikolai and Aleksei will tag along. It might not look all that impressive, but it has the best damn food in town.

Gina scoots into the seat across from me, giving me one of her sweet smiles. When I look up to see the waitress coming toward us, I try my best to stifle a groan and prepare myself for what could be a nasty encounter.

I don’t have time to explain anything. All I can do is whisper a quick, “I am sorry,” and hope for the best.

Chapter11

Gina

Ihave no idea what Dima’s apologizing for, and I don’t get a chance to ask him. Instead, we’re interrupted by a nasally-voiced waitress who’s looking at Dmitri as if she wants to mount him right here at the fucking table.

“Dmitri!” she squeals, making my hackles raise and my blood pressure spike dangerously high.

Dima’s blue eyes briefly flick to mine before he gives her a reserved smile and says, “Good morning, Tiffany.”

“You haven’t been in for a few days. I was wondering when you’d be back.”

I grab one of the menus just so I have something to keep my hands busy. The temptation to put my new boxing skills to use is very strong. I ignore it and try to behave like a mature adult. So what if she’s practically drooling over my man? That doesn’t mean she’s going to get him, right? I try not to think about the fact that she may very well have already had him.

She’s still chatting away as if I don’t exist with a hand on her jutted-out hip, and I’m wondering why in the hell Dmitri isn’t stopping this pathetic display.

“So, do you want your usual?” she asks, batting her eyes at him.

“Yes, that would be great. Gina, what would you like?” he asks, finally turning his eyes to me.

Tiffany looks at me like I’m an annoying bug she’d like to squash, but she’s not looking at me like I’m an actual threat, which is really pissing me off. I scan the menu again and pick out what I remember Jamie saying she’d had. Tiffany gives me the fakest smile I’ve ever seen and walks off to get us our food.
