How wrong I had been. He might have been a better man back then, but I find that hard to believe. He got us kicked out of Valora.

My heart shatters all over again. For the dad he once was. If only I could have convinced him to change his ways. But he only wanted what was good for him. Neither my love or my mom’s was enough for him to stop.

I stop and realize I’ve made it to my room. I’m not sure I want to go in. It’ll only make me think of what could’ve been. What never will be now.

“Marra!”

My shoulders slump as I turn toward the voice. “Halen! Bash! What are you doing here?”

They rush over and both wrap their arms around me.

“Are you okay?” Halen asks.

I shake my head no.

Bash runs his fingers through my hair. “You saved us.”

“It was my fault. He only used you because you’re close to me. Did he really torture you?”

Halen leans her head against mine and doesn’t say anything.

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s not your fault,” Bash insists.

“In a way, it is.”

“You would never do that to us.” He looks me in the eyes. “Ever. That was all on him, and you made it right.”

I clench my jaw. “But I can’t undo any of that. Anything he did.”

Halen sniffles and wipes her eyes. “It’s all over, and we’ll heal. It’s not like we have any broken bones or anything.”

“What exactly did he do?”

She closes her eyes. “I don’t want to think about it. And besides, he can’t hurt us again. You made sure of that.”

“And as much as it hurts to have killed him, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. He needed to be stopped. I can’t believe he was behind your disappearances!” I pull away from them and reach for my doorknob. “Let’s sit down in here.”

“Your uncle sent us to find you. He wants to have dinner with us.”

“I just killed my dad—his brother.” I open the door. “I’m not hungry. I don’t know how he can be.”

We go inside and Halen sits on the bed. “Are you going to stay here or return to the academy?”

“I have no idea.” My mind brings up pictures of students glaring at me while demanding my dad’s death. They got what they wanted. And at my own hand, no less. “Although, staying here for a while might be nice. I’m sure my uncle would let you stay here too.”

Bash plays with my hair. “Do you feel more powerful?”

Queen Sirena’s curse. Now that I’ve killed my dad, I should have come into my full powers. “I don’t feel any different.”

Halen comes over and plays with my hair. “Maybe you came into your powers when you got your trident.”

I shrug. “Or maybe it doesn’t happen right away. Also, I didn’t kill him with my trident.”

Bash pulls me close. “Don’t worry about it. You have more than enough power already. Can we watch a movie and make some popcorn? Is that how things work in the castle?”

Halen reaches for a phone near the bed. “We can do better than that. I’m going to call the kitchen and have them send up popcorn, ice cream, and candy. Want anything else?”

We discuss what to get, then settle on a movie. I start to feel better just being with the two of them and doing something so normal. Hopefully this will last. But I doubt it will.

Everything has changed.
