Turns out Troy was thinking a lot.

“Probably the mango lobster roll to start, maybe the New York Strip and some tempura udon.”

“Wow. Okay, let me catch up. I don’t know where to start.”

“Do you like sushi?”

“I’ve never really tried it.”

“Well, if you like seafood you can try some of the mango lobster roll. It’s going to be a big size, and then if you like it, we can always get more.”

Was he being generous or just trying to show off? Too soon to tell. In fact, the last date she went on—was it really over a year now? Wow. That time was just lunch and he got change from a twenty. Already it was looking like that might not even cover the tip here.

“Oh, we don’t have to do that. I’ll just try yours and get something else.” She eyed the menu, aware that his was already closed, while he watched her with his hands folded.

“What do you like?” she asked him.

“I guess all of it.”

“I don’t usually eat a lot of meat, and I rarely get fish, so I think I might try the salmon.”

“Good. If you like shellfish, you could consider getting the one that has the scallops and shrimp too.”

“Oh no, that’s okay. I’m not sure I could eat all of that.”

Troy shrugged. “I eat a lot.”

“I didn’t mean to imply anything.”

He shrugged again. “Occupational hazard.”

Before Megan could ask what he meant by that, the waiter walked up, they placed their orders, and the chef followed up, firing up the grill for the show to begin.

CHAPTER14

“What do you think?” Troy asked as he set down his fork next to the now empty plate where they had split a decadent chocolate lava cake.

“I’m stuffed, and I didn’t even finish all of my food. I had no idea the portions would be so big. And I still have my drink that I have barely touched.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it. Take your time and finish the drink. They don’t need the table.”

Everything had been delicious, even the drinks Troy had ordered after the waitress had suggested something from the bar. It was clear Megan didn’t drink or eat out much. Her eyes had closed when she sampled the sushi or sipped the drink as she savored. That she enjoyed what he shared with her made him want to share much more. In fact, the real feast was her. With her hair down, the red hue glowed in the light of the fire, making her look at home in the flames with a fire of her own. She hadn’t worn much makeup, but the pink lips that pouted out invited him to stare and almost begged him to kiss her. He had requested a private table for that reason alone but was disappointed when the opportunity never presented itself.

They actually hadn’t gotten much time to talk. Once the waitress had delivered drinks and water, the chef in a perfectly crisp, white hat and apron had arrived to deliver an artful display with his knife skills and spatula that danced on the hibachi grill in front of them.

Troy wasn’t ready to give up the view of her across from him yet. She sipped her drink, which was a lemon drop he had suggested, and he watched the slender curve of her neck as she picked up the glass with a gentle touch and wiped her mouth afterward with the napkin from her lap.

“I’m surprised you made that drink last this whole time.”

“I’m savoring,” she said with a genuine smile in his direction. “How did you learn so much about food?”

Troy shrugged. “My mom was a great cook. I hung out with her a lot since my older brother was always with my dad on the ranch. Plus, it helps I like to eat.”

“I think that’s sweet.”

“Do you like to cook?”

Megan shook her head. “I keep trying though. I like the idea of it, but either get lost in the details or hung up on the directions.”
