Troy blew out a breath and took the hit. “You’re right. I’ve gotten wrapped up at work and let my focus drift away from what’s important. This has been a good reset. Seeing him lose almost everything brought back a lot of perspective. I needed that.”

“It sounds like it.”

“I appreciate everything you did for him. I know I’ve said that before, but it never feels like enough. I didn’t even know you, and you were helping me all along.”

Megan drew in a breath. “I lost my grandmother when I was in college. She raised me. My whole family died in a fire when I was an infant.”

“Holy shit. I had no idea. I’m so sorry.”

“Thank you,” came the response that seemed almost automatic. Megan swallowed and continued like she wanted to get away from the subject as fast as possible. “I know what loss feels like, and I enjoyed talking with him. In a lot of ways, it was nice to have someone to talk with.”

“He enjoyed it too.”

“I guess that’s why he tried to set us up,” she said, letting out a laugh and brightening back up.

Troy followed her lead, even though he was desperate to know more about her past. No wonder she had become a firefighter and had such a powerful inner strength.

“Dad was thrilled today when I was getting ready. Actually, he was happier than I’ve seen him in a long time.”

“I’ll bet. He got what he wanted.”

“He also told me I’m not allowed back in the house until late.”

“Oh?”

“I was hoping to spend more time with you.” He raised an eyebrow and grinned when she blushed.

Megan laughed and looked down before tucking her hair back behind her ear. “I don’t know what it is about you. I keep trying to be annoyed with you, and it’s not working.”

“That’s because of my devilish good looks and my rapier wit,” he offered.

“Okay, you’re still irritating, but that earns a point.”

“Points are always good coming from a beautiful woman, who I’d like to get to know even better. How about we go for a drive?”

Megan paused and seemed to be on the verge of saying no.

“I know a great place we can see the stars and talk. It’s a full moon tonight, so we’ll have plenty of light.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “He told you all about me, didn’t he?”

Troy felt himself grin. “He’s a great wingman.”

CHAPTER15

Megan sat in Troy’s truck as he navigated the winding road up to some overlook, which she had Googled on her phone during the drive just to make sure it was legit. According to him—and her quick research—not only was it legit, but the views were stellar.

“Keep an eye out for deer,” he said as he watched the road with a laser-like focus. The moonlight washed over him and his powerful arms as he gripped the wheel and turned up another climb.

“I’m feeling a little sick.”

“Hang on, let me pull over.”

“No, it’s okay. It’s not much farther, right?”

He shook his head and continued up two more turns until the sign read scenic overlook, and the road thankfully leveled off into a parking lot that overlooked Goldvein.

Troy pulled up right into the front spot, the only car around.
