Crap. What did she say? She hadn’t been with the same guy for more than three dates? Hadn’t gotten that far yet. Was that okay? Would he think that was weird?

“You know what, it’s cool. We don’t have to get into that. You haven’t asked for my history. I didn’t mean to overstep.”

“No, um, no…it’s fine. I just don’t have much to talk about.”

“That’s surprising.”

Okay. That was a nice compliment but made her feel weird like she should have more. Better to avoid.

“When I think of my love language, I think of my grandmother.”

“I remember you said she raised you.”

“Yeah, it was just the two of us. She was a true lady. Very old-fashioned, so when she died I organized all the arrangements with that in mind. That part was stressful, but I think the part that meant the most to me was when I stayed the whole time. She was old school, so I think she would’ve appreciated it. It helped me too.”

“The whole time? Like you didn’t leave the body?”

Megan shook her head. “I didn’t. Paid extra to have the funeral home open it all up for others to join in as well. It was a long day.” She thought about the memory for a moment and drew in a long breath to center herself.

“What language is that?”

“Quality time.”

“I like that. What else is there?”

“Gifts, words of affirmation, and physical touch. People usually are a mix from what I’ve read.”

“So you’d be acts of service, quality time, and physical touch?”

“How did you know?”

“You’re a good hugger.”

Megan smiled. “I think you’re a great hugger, and a great cook. Does that mean you’re the same?”

“Look at that, we match.” Troy reached over and took her hand in his. “Just so you know, I can do a lot more than hug.”

And boy, that alone sent a shiver of promise down Megan’s body.

CHAPTER19

The first stop was the hardware store. Troy parked the truck right up front since there weren’t too many people there around dinner time. He came around to get her door and smiled when she had already hopped out. Whatever had happened earlier seemed a distant memory as his confident lopsided sexy grin was back on his too-handsome-to-be-real face. That jaw almost undid her, and Megan had to stay focused on walking when he slid his arm around her shoulders while they walked to the store.

She hadn’t lied when she said she didn’t have a lot of experience in hardware stores. In fact, other than showing up with Buzz to get random brushes to clean different parts of the fire engine and very specific lightbulbs for the station, she’d never been in one. The space had a tendency to overwhelm her. Where others might see possibilities, she saw a multitude of things she had no clue about. Hell, she couldn’t even decipher what the loudspeaker was saying in the echo of the cavernous space.

They headed over to their destination, and rather than get overwhelmed, she found the paint section calming. All of the perfectly symmetrical colors fanned out in a rainbow display brought a sense of order. They found the interior paint wall, and each picked up a book on different rooms. He took bathrooms and she took kitchens.

“What looks good to you?”

“Well it really depends what you like. Unless you’re hoping to open it up.”

“How do you mean?”

“You could do a Bed and Breakfast someday. The house is big enough, but that might be a lot to take on.”

Troy thought it over to himself while checking out the book of his own.

“It’s not a bad idea for down the road. It would be awhile.”
