“Nat babysits you?” I make the connection.

“Yeah.” She smiles as she thinks about our friend. “Normally, she’d be coming with us, but she had a date tonight.”

Vaguely, I remember later in the night on Cinco De Mayo someone suggesting if Cam didn’t make a move soon, that she would need to get out and explore her horizons. She hadn’t been much interested in it, but looks as if that’s what she decided to do. Trinity looks upset.

“Does that bother you?”

She nods slowly. “I wish she was my mom.” She says the words softly. They’re almost so low I can’t hear them.

Oh my God, Natalie would love to hear this. “Do you? She’s a pretty amazing person.”

“She is. She always cuts the crust off my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When I want my hair braided, she does it without complaining. Dad complains a lot.” She wrinkles her nose.

“He does?” I laugh softly.

“It’s because he does it wrong. Then he gets irritated and tells me just to wear it down. But I like it fixed,” she defends.

“I do too; it’s cute today.” I yank on the end of her braid.

“Natalie came over before her date.”

“Oh, did she?” I laugh loudly this time. “What’d your dad say about that?”

“Words I can’t repeat.”

I just bet he did.

Before I can respond to her, it’s our turn in line. “Two of us.” I hold up my fingers.

“Go on over to the far side.” He points to an empty pod.

“Let me get on the inside,” I tell her, knowing the momentum of being swung will put us both over on my side and I don’t want to crush her. Once we get situated, I give her a smile. “You ready?”

She kicks her feet. “So ready.”

Music starts, as does the ride. At first it’s gentle, picking up speed as it starts to swing us back and forth, around and around. She squeals as it slingshots us. “Put your hands up,” I shout as I do what I’m asking her to. Trinity giggles and so do I as we’re thrown through the night, waving at the boys as we’re pushed toward them.

Both Cam and Danny have their phones out and pointed toward us. We smile and yell at them. All too soon, the ride is over and the worker is coming by to pop the door open. “Have a great night, ladies. You two having fun put a smile on my face.”

“You too.” I smile back at him.

We run over to where the guys are still sitting at the picnic table.

“Have fun?” Cam asks Trinity.

“Yeah, thanks for going with me, Hayden.”

“No problem, if you have anything else you wanna do, let me know.”

Cam checks his watch. “We have to head out. We have a dinner date with grandma, don’t we?” He looks over at Trinity.

“She’s making my favorite,” Trinity nods.

“We’ll see you around then.” Danny waves at the two of them while I do the same. “Look at this.” He lifts the phone up so it’s on eye level for me.

It’s a picture of Trinity and I, laughing and smiling a few minutes ago. “She’s such a sweet girl.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so hot as you stepping in to help her.” He drops a kiss on the top of my head, sighing. “You’re gonna be a great mom when we have kids.”

With any other man this would scare me. But with him? It feels like it’s written in our destiny.
