“Is that them?”I hold my hands in front of my face, looking through the holes between my fingers.

“That’s them!”

It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen, the three of them coming out of the trees. Cam’s strong arms hold onto the bundle cradled against his chest. Those arms are the ones that have held me and his child. They’ve kept us safe in times that we’ve both been afraid. They’ve held me softly late at night as we talked about our dreams.

“Need a medic!”

“Go to them.” Mia pushes me toward my future and my past.

“I can’t,” I cry. “My feet won’t carry me.”

I was so scared, so goddamn scared.

Mia puts her arm around my shoulders, dragging me to where they’re heading for the medic. I hope it’s not for either one of the men and then feel horrible since that would mean the child had been hurt.

My heart can’t take this. I need to know they’re okay.

Cameron immediately goes to where Trinity is standing and scoops her up in his arms. I give them a moment, letting her have the time with her dad she needs.

Gauge comes over, holding his arms out for me. “Are you hurt?” I question immediately, scared to death he’s done something to harm his progress.

“No.” He shakes his head. “I think I gained something out there that I’d lost. My confidence.”

Pulling back from him, I glance up into his eyes. There is a calm that wasn’t there before. A look of accomplishment that’s been missing for the last few months. “I’m so proud of you,” I cry. “So proud of what you’ve done and how far you’ve come.”

“I’m proud of you too.” He leans in, hugging me tightly. “I should’ve stayed out of the way with you and Cam. If he’s what you want, then you have my blessing. I’m sorry I was such a dick.”

Laughing, I try to keep the tears from coming. “You may be a dick, but isn’t that what older brothers are for?”

“We do have reputations. Someone’s waiting for you.”

He lets me go and heads to my parents. Standing directly behind where Gauge was is Cam. He’s filthy and wet, but he’s the best thing I’ve ever seen.

“Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?” He flirts as he walks toward me.

“Are you okay?” I ask, barely able to believe he’s standing right there in front of me.

“I’m perfect.” He grabs my hands. “Being out there with Gauge and rescuing that little girl was the best thing that could’ve happened. It showed me what I’ve been missing not having you in my life and it gave Gauge and I a chance to talk.”

Tears are already gathering in my eyes. “I was so scared.”

“I know you were, Nat, but we’re good. All of us.”

Looking over my shoulder, I see Gauge watching us. He flashes me a thumbs up and, for the first time since all of this started, I believe him. Opening my mouth to speak, he covers it with his finger. “Let me go first.”

Nodding, I give him the floor.

“I should’ve told you this a long time ago. I’ve felt it for years. I love you. More than I ever imagined possible. You’ve changed everything about who I thought I was and what I deserved. You’ve helped my daughter grow from the shell of the girl she was into this little woman who will one day rule the world. I want her to be as strong as you. To be willing to stand up for what she believes in. I want you at home when I get off-shift and there when I wake up in the middle of the night so I’m not scared you’ve left. Nat, I want you for all the good times and the bad times. With you, I know I won’t ever falter.”

Tears are streaming down my face now as I grab his hands in mine. “We’re going to falter, Cam. We aren’t perfect. It’s going to take a while for us to relearn habits and to make things our own. There’s one thing I can promise you, though. Nobody will ever love you and Trinity as much as I do.”

He pulls me in for a tight hug, his lips at my ear. “That’s all I need to hear.”
